Destiny 2is a game that often thrives on challenge and reward. The thrill of overcoming a tough enemy, a complex puzzle, or a grueling Raid keeps many players hooked. However, there is a fine line between challenge and frustration, and Bungie needs to be careful not to cross it withDestiny 2’s upcoming Lightfall expansion.

Lightfall’s Legendary difficulty for its campaign is a new feature that debuted withThe Witch Queen, and it offers a more challenging and rewarding experience for veteran players. In Legendary difficulty, enemies are tougher, the players' Power Level is capped, and the rewards are doubled. Players that finish the Legendary Campaign also get a partial pass on the expansion’s Power Level grind. It’s a challenge that many players have fallen in love with, and they’re asking for more inDestiny 2’s Lightfall.

Lightfall’s Legendary Campaign Should Live Up To The Witch Queen’s

However, whileThe Witch Queen campaign and destination activitieswere adequate in terms of difficulty, Lightfall could risk going overboard because of the changes coming with the expansion to the game’s overall difficulty. Increased cooldowns on abilities, a nerf to resilience, and difficulty being scaled up a bit across the board could prove too much with Lightfall’s already tougher Legendary Campaign.

Bungie has announced its plan to nerf ability uptime when the Lightfall expansion arrives. Specifically, the studio is reducing the effectiveness of ability regen stats, including Discipline, Strength, and class ability-related stats.

Ultimately, players may have to rely a little more on their weapons and less on their Supers, grenades, and melee attacks. These changes could potentially make the game less enjoyable, especially for players who enjoy using their abilities and experimenting with different ability-based builds or non-meta builds. Moreover, it could makeDestiny 2’s new Legendary Campaigntoo hard, with players having to face stronger enemies with fewer tools at their disposal.

Thankfully, Bungie has also announced some changes to weapon crafting systems, mod slotting systems, and seasonal vendor upgrades for Lightfall. Some of these changes could be positive, such as making craftable weapons more interesting and meaningful, overhauling how and what mods can be used in armor, and introducing a more experimental framework for seasonal rewards that doesn’t focus on FOMO.

Bungie Could Have a Hard Time Balancing New Content Around Destiny 2’s Changes

Said changes could easily affect the Legendary Campaign positively, givingDestiny 2’s playersa new weapon and ability meta to explore. Ultimately, Bungie was hopefully careful not to go overboard with the difficulty of the Lightfall Legendary Campaign with so many changes coming. The campaign should be challenging and reward players accordingly more than it should be punishing. It should test the players' skill and strategy but not penalize them for using their abilities and their preferred weapons, and then it should offer a variety of enemies and environments but not overwhelm them with too many threats and mechanic-heavy obstacles.

Ultimately, Bungie has a history of making great campaigns andexpansions forDestiny 2, and Lightfall could be one of its best yet. With the Legendary campaign being a key feature of the expansion, it could make or break players' initial experience. Thus, Bungie should attempt to find the right balance between challenge and reward to make Lightfall’s launch as smooth and enjoyable as possible, making the Legendary Campaign accessible and fairly difficult, while keeping in mind that the game is also becoming a tad harder with the expansion.

Destiny 2is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. The Lightfall expansion is set to launch on all platforms on February 28.
