AsDestiny 2’s world inches closer to another impending collapse, the Darkness encroaches on The Traveler and the guardians who protect it. The power of light has always kept the enigmatic Darkness at bay, but the overall narrative seems to be hinting towards a foreboding return of this vaguely-named cataclysm. It’s unclear what the Darkness has in store for humanity for when it does inevitably arrive, but the guardians will need all the power they can muster to defeat it.

Evidently, the guardians will somehow be harnessing the power of darkness to fight the… Darkness. Assuming a recentDestiny 2leak is accurate, that means the Darkness will enact a new “Collapse” on humanity. Players will supposedly soon have access to a fourth new subclass based on darkness-related elemental abilities, and if so, this would be a huge change forDestinyin general in a variety of ways, lore-wise and gameplay-wise.

An Impending Collapse for Destiny 2

While there’s been plenty of buildup to a climactic finale inDestiny 2’s Season 11, it seems this leak proves the game is receiving some even more seismic changes in the major forthcoming expansion for Year Four. Leaked on 4Chan and signal boosted by popularDestiny 2player Sweatcicle, the game will finally tackle the climax of whatDestinyhas been hinting at since the beginning. Similar in scope toShadowkeep, players will be receiving a huge expansion in the fall entitledDestiny 2: Collapse, referencing the “Collapse” lore event that occurs several years prior to the firstDestinygame.

According to the leak, the mysterious Darkness that was discovered duringShadowkeepand has been teased since the beginning ofDestinyis on its way to Earth’s galaxy. More of the pyramid-shaped ships have set a course for Earth on behalf of something called the Winnower, the supposed leader of the Darkness. The leak does similarly align with some of thestory content in Rasputin’s bunker on Io, introduced during Season of the Worthy just a few weeks ago. Guardians will need to combat various new forces of the Darkness part of a new enemy faction called Veil. Interestingly, the leak also states players will gain access to a new fourth element and subclass simply called “darkness” as well.

Assuming players are given access to a completely new elemental subclass, there could be big changes coming for each guardian class inDestiny2.

Destiny 2 Titans: Towering Darkness

Starting with Titans, their builds tend to be heavily aggressive with some defensive strategies, so a darkness subclass would likely function similarly. As suh, players would likely have access to equipment that functions similar to the wave-based blasts that various Taken enemies have inDestiny. Grenades could function like the Taken Cabal shields or some of the Taken obstacles, which charge up and physically push away guardians when they get too close. These grenades wouldn’t necessarily kill per se, but could push opponents back to clear them out or make an opening. Melee abilities could function similarly as well, like if there was ashoulder charge akin to the Striker: Code of the Earthshaker tree that pushed opponents away.

The Titan super would likely be a one-time-use ability, considering the majority of Titan supers are roaming limited time attacks. A darkness-themed super for a Titan would likely be a room clearing technique used to send out several seismic blasts across the surrounding area of the Titan’s activated super. An ability like this would be a perfect game-changer forCrucible modes like Controlor specific scenarios during a raid.

First Major Destiny Update Won’t Release Until After February - Hunter gunslinger subclass

Destiny 2 Hunters: In the Shadows

For a Hunter’s darkness-themed subclass, abilities would likely focus on technical usage of distortions and suppression to hinder opponents. Grenades would likely function similar to those Taken devices that tether to nearby guardians and slow players until they’re destroyed, perfect for setting up kill traps.Destiny 2’s Hunterscould also utilize a multi-teleport ability in place of the typical Dodge, like the Taken Thralls that have an instant teleportation that propels them short distances quickly. Functionally, it could be used in tandem with a weapon or even a super ability; for example, a Hunter could teleport once a short distance, fire their weapon, which then automatically initiates another teleport, and so on.

Darkness super abilities for Hunters could be like the waves of blinding suppression that higher level Taken Captains use. Players could blind and stun opponents in place, keeping them suppressed long enough for teammates or even the Hunter themselves to secure the kills. The darkness suppression could also inflict a poison status effectsimilar to that of the Thorn exotic, something none of the other abilities inDestiny 2can do.

Destiny 2 Warlock: Masters of Oblivion

A darkness-themedWarlock subclassbecomes a bit more ambiguous compared to the other two guardian classes. It would be interesting to see some kind of possession mechanic similar to the Taken, but that’s not likely considering it’d be impossible to design and implement in PvP. Melee abilities could theoretically be used to conjure decoys instead, where a full charge can be used to kill an enemy and then a second charge could place that decoy where the player wants it. Darkness Warlocks would probably be more dexterity focused, such as using Blink but with more horizontal distance during the teleport. Grenade abilities would probably be similar to some of the Taken balls of darkness that are destroyed in public events, which could also similarly inflict poison status to anyone within the blast radius.

Darknesssuper abilities for Warlockscould maybe take inspiration from the Gambit mode, acting as a huge buff ability for guardians. When players invade in Gambit, they receive a powerful overshield and can hunt down the enemy team’s exact positions. Warlocks could have a similar short-term ability that buffs their defense (generally a stat that’s very weak on Warlocks anyway) and give them temporary sight of where enemies are.

Fighting Fire with Fire in Destiny 2: Collapse

Darkness opens up a huge range of potential abilities for guardians, as it’s a force so enigmatic that it’s hard to really tell what to expect inDestiny 2’s future. While similar rumors to this most recent Collapseleak toted similar elements coming toDestiny 3, it seems those elements may be coming to aDestiny 2expansion instead. Many of these concepts are inspired by the Taken, which is probably the closestDestinyhas gotten to a true representation of the Darkness, but as the lore progresses and those pyramid-like ships inch closer to Earth, only time will tell what the Darkness will bring to guardians.
