The first-person shooter genre has come a long way since its origins more than thirty years ago. With id Software’sDoomandQuakebeing two of themost influential FPS games ever made, the genre got off to a nice early start and has been a mainstay in the industry for decades. Despite them being developed by the same studio, they are two different games in terms of their style and overall visuals. The former set a precedent, while the latter helped improve on the formula, and now there’s going to be a chance to see the two mixed together.

A modder known as Drugod, along withWrath: Aeon of Ruindeveloper Nahuel, is working on a project that will be a crossover betweenDoomandQuake, with a recent stream showing off what’s been done so far. For any fans of these classics, it’s bound to pique interest, especially as it blends the two ideas into one game and uses assets from both titles likeDoom’s enemies andQuake’s maps. The mod looks really interesting in its current state, and also shows just how far technology moved forward between just these two games.

Currently, there is no release date, and in fact the project doesn’t even appear to have an official name, outside of being called a “Doom / Quake Crossover.” Some in a recent Twitter thread humorously suggested such monikers as “Quoom” or “Drake.” With some fascinatingmods for the originalDoomstill being done to this day, the idea of combining that game with the studio’s 1996 follow-up seems like it’s been a long time coming. Both are beloved entries in the FPS genre, so it will be interesting to see the finished product.

On top of that,John Romero recently wishedWolfenstein 3Da happy 30th birthday, a game which predates the other two and was also instrumental in setting the blueprint for first-person shooters. It seems evident that id Software was striking while the iron was hot all those years ago, helping to influence many other games to come. While the modern-day iteration of the company is still going strong, many will always fondly remember the earlier days with the classics.

Withid Software about to start on its next project, fans will be speculating about what the studio has in store. Some have suggested it could be a newQuakegame, which would be exciting given how popular theDoomreboot was back in 2016. At this stage, not much is known about what the developer is planning, but a lot of eyes and ears will be watching for future updates.
