The Suicide SquadstarJai Courtney reignited the never-ending feud between Marvel and DC Comics during an interview for the press tour of the upcoming DC movie. Directed by James Gunn,The Suicide Squadwill be a follow-up to David Ayer’s 2016Suicide Squadfilm, but will serve as its own unique story.
Besides a few returning actors (Courtney’s Captain Boomerang,Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, and Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag)The Suicide Squadwill not have many references to the previous film. The creators have stated that this film will neither be a direct sequel nor will it be a reboot.

Courtney’s Captain Boomerang served as a minor foil in the previous film. While incredibly gifted in combat, Boomerang looked for ways of getting out of his life or death contract rather than using his abilities to help save the world. Captain Boomerang’s personality is destructive and explosive, to say the least, so the actor appears to be in character when he blurted out his two-word quote in an interview with Jake Hamilton of Jake’s Takes. For those that don’t know, when asked which of the Marvel Cinematic Universe characters they would like to join the Suicide Squad, Courtney responded with a humorous rebuttal of “F*** Marvel!” Courtney has made his stance very clear; he’s ride or die with his current side on DC. It’s not unheard of for actors to have roles on both Marvel and DC Comics films, even director Gunn has helmed projects for Marvel Studios despite working onThe Suicide SquadanditsPeacemakerspin-off.
Many have high expectations forThe Suicide Squadsince the last film didn’t do well critically. Fans are hoping for redemption with this new addition to the DC universe. It was also reported thatGunn was given “carte blanche"on the film, which allowed him to kill off any character that he wanted to.
Gunn had been tapped to write and directThe Suicide Squadfor Warner Bros. and DC after Disney fired from himGuardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. The decision was prompted by controversial posts Gunn wrote on Twitter several years before helming theGuardians of the Galaxyfilms. While Disney ultimately reversed its decision and reinstated Gunn, his new commitment toThe Suicide Squadforced production on the thirdGuardiansto be delayed.
TheGuardians of the Galaxymovieswere very successful and stood in their own lane, cementing their own legacy. So with that track record, many can assumeThe Suicide Squadwill solidify itself amongst the better DC movies, which many fans feel have been underwhelming, for the most part.
The Suicide Squadwill be in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6th, 2021.
