The Sims 3’s Doe Family Might be Hiding a Dark Secret
The Doe family consists of corporate employee John Doe, his wife Jane Doe, and their children Joseph, Jennifer, and James. They look like the traditional American family that’s straight out of apre-warFalloutstory. Despite their innocent appearance, they might be hiding a dark secret, as evidenced by the family’s official description. It says that the Does seem to have a perfect life and that nothing mysterious seems to be happening, but it’s also unusual that their house had a basement that somehow disappeared.
The names of the family members are also suspect, as John and Jane Doe are placeholder identities for adults, while Jennifer and James Doe are used for children. Law enforcement sometimes uses these placeholders when it finds a cadaver but don’t know what that person’s name is yet. This could suggest that the family may be on the run or hiding a heinous crime.

What Developers and Fans Speculate About The Sims’ Doe Family
The Sims 3producer Lisa Smith posted a community blog about the Does in anticipation of Midnight Hollow’s release in September 2013. Her introduction to the family is very similar to the official description. John is moving up the corporate ladder, Jane is the perfect homemaker, and the well-behaved kids have various accomplishments. It’s just like a family one would find in an episode ofMad Men, and like the characters in this show, the members of the Doe family aren’t what they seem to be. Adding to the mystery, Smith posted an interview with the Does.
The interview starts with John telling the producer about their lovely home and that it’s thanks to the light of his life, Jane. When the interviewer asked the family to tell something about themselves, Jane asked if she could serve them some more tea. John answers the question with a generic answer that they’re living the dream and that their home is great. The producer then asks them why a sunny family like theirs moved to thescarySimsworldof Midnight Hollow. Jane deflects by offering some more tea, Joseph angrily walks out, and Jennifer just stares ahead with a blank expression. John answers the question by saying that they just needed a change in scenery.
When the interviewer asked for a tour of the home, John asked her to leave because his wife was not feeling well. The behavior of the family during this dialogue is suspicious, to say the least. There’s a part of their home that they don’t want anyone to know about and the kids seem traumatized and angry about something. Some fans speculate that this might be aStepford Wivessituation, wherein Jane and the kids could be brainwashed into being a mechanically perfect family. Others say that the Does might be hiding a dark past, so they filled their basement and changed their names to something completely generic. Either way,Sims 3players can interact with the Doe family themselves if they want to hunt for answers.
The Sims 3is available now on Mobile, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
