Mario Kart 8 Deluxehas proven to be a huge selling point for the Nintendo Switch since its release back in early 2017. Despite originally being a Wii U game, it found new life on the Switch’s much larger install base of players, and has gone on to be one of the platform’s most popular multiplayer offerings. To date, it has sold over 53 million units, ranking it at the top spot among thebest-selling Nintendo Switch gamesof all time.
As if the base game wasn’t already a fantastic racer, Nintendo has been steadily adding new tracks and characters toMario Kart 8 Deluxevia the Booster Course DLC Pack. With 4 waves of content already added, and a new one due for release next week, fans of the game have no shortage of fun to enjoy with this robust package. However, with the sixth and final DLC pack to release sometime later this year, Nintendo should look back to a previous installment and borrow one of its greatest selling points forMario Kart 8 Deluxe’s last DLC offering.

New Mario Kart, New Ideas
TheMario Kartseries has become a mainstay franchise for Nintendo, with a new installment being part of every console life cycle. From the originalSuper Mario Karton SNES, all the way up toMario Kart Touron mobile, Nintendo has made a consistent effort to always revamp the series and make it accessible in each new hardware generation. With these new games, Nintendo always tends to shake up the formula by adding a new gameplay mechanic or gimmick to keep things fresh.
The GameCube entry in particular,Mario Kart: Double Dash, featured what is arguably the most innovative gameplay addition to date. As the subtitle of the game would suggest,Double Dashfeatured the ability for players to havetwo characters on one single kart, with the capacity to switch between them at the push of a button. This means that one character controls the kart while the other uses weapons and defensive items. The neat trick here is that both characters hold their own respective items, which leads to players being able to collect a larger amount of total pick-ups.

Including Double Dash’s Dual Racer Concept
Therefore, instead of only being able to hold two items at a time, players can now have a total of four. This is a feature that is still exclusive toMario Kart: Double Dashand no other entry in the long-running franchise. It’s unclear why Nintendo chose to never revisit it, but it brought a whole new level of fun and chaos on the racetrack. IfMario Kart 8 Deluxeis getting additional contentvia DLC, in an attempt to make it the most robustMario Kartaround, one more feature being tossed in wouldn’t hurt.
This would be especially true not just for the main racetracks, but forMario Kart 8 Deluxe’s many battle modes. These competitive matches would only be heightened by players being able to carry more items, bringing a new level of strategy to the moment to moment gameplay. Bom-omb blast in particular would become an even more frantic rush for survival with players being able to store double the amount of bombs in an arsenal.
With thenext DLC wave forMario Kart 8 Deluxedue for release next week, that leaves players with one more pack to look forward to. There’s no confirmation of what will be featured in this final addition, but it would be cool to see Nintendo go all in and borrow this gameplay feature to spice things up alongside a bevy of new racecourses and characters to choose from.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxeis available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
