It’s been nearly a decade since the lastDead Spacegame released, and fans have been hungry for a new entry in the sci-fi survival-horror series. While EA is busy working on theDead Spaceremake,Dead Spacecreator Glen Schofield is making a spiritual successor of sorts at Striking Distance Studios calledThe Callisto Protocol. Horror fans will have to wait until next year toplay theDead Spaceremake, butThe Callisto Protocolis scheduled to launch at the end of 2022.

The Callisto Protocolrelease dateis currently pegged for December 2, with the game aiming for release across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. WhenThe Callisto Protocollaunches, it will throw players into a terrifying sci-fi horror world where they will have to contend with all kinds of horrific monstrosities. In a recent tweet, Schofield showed off a newCallisto Protocolenemy called The Blind. This grotesque, humanoid creature has no eyes, but it does have tentacles growing from its body. Schofield says that this particular enemy has adapted to the dark, meaning players can expect to run into this thing when exploringThe Callisto Protocol’s more dimly-lit areas.

The Callisto Protocolgameplay trailers present the game as a new take on theDead Spaceformula, with players exploring far-future, sci-fi location in third-person, contending with monsters and other hazards. But whileDead Spaceis set on a ship,The Callisto Protocolis instead set in a prison colony on Jupiter’s moon Callisto.Prison inmate Jacob Leeis the main playable character ofThe Callisto Protocol, outfitted with a suit that is very reminiscent of the one worn by Isaac Clarke in theDead Spacegames. Aesthetically,Callisto Protocoltakes many cues from its inspiration, but it also looks to establish its own identity in the survival-horror arena.

There are many othersimilarities betweenThe Callisto Protocoland Schofield’s previous work onDead Space, but it looks like the game will also be able to stand on its own. Survival-horror fans will have to wait until later this year to see ifThe Callisto Protocollives up to the hype, and if it manages to meet or exceed the high bar set by theDead Spaceseries.
