A recent survey has claimed to reveal the 10 scariest horror games. Horror games have been around for decades, though the genre really exploded in popularity in the 90s thanks to hit games like Capcom’sResident EvilandKonami’sSilent Hill. Horror games remain popular to this day, with new entries in the horror genre released on a regular basis.
This past January,EA released theDead Spaceremake to widespread acclaim, while Capcom will soon be launching the highly-anticipatedResident Evil 4remake. There was a time when it seemed the horror genre moving in a much more action-oriented direction, but the genre has rediscovered itself and there are plenty of new horror games released on a regular basis. Not all horror games are created equal, though, and some genre fans may only be interested in playing the scariest of the bunch.

While scary is subjective, over 27,000 participated in a survey on Ranker analyzed by Datslots to determine the scariest video game of all time. The originalSilent Hillfrom 1999 earned the crown of scariest video game with 4,098 votes, followed by theoriginalDead Spacegame from 2008. In order, the rest of the list was the originalResident Evilfrom 1996,Silent Hill 2,Outlast,Dead Space 2,Resident Evil 4,Amnesia: The Dark Descent, the originalResident Evil 2from 1998, andSilent Hill 4: The Room.
Top 10 Scariest Horror Games
For the most part, the list may be what one would expect, dominated by the biggest names in the horror genre with a couple of smaller titles in the form ofAmnesia: The Dark DescentandOutlast. However, some may be scratching their head at the inclusion of some of these games, particularlyResident Evil 4. The originalResident Evil 4put far less emphasis on the franchise’s horror elements, instead presenting itself as more of an over-the-top action game. While it certainly some scary moments, the game is easily one of the least scary games in theResident Evilfranchise. It’s very surprising that it ranks ahead ofAmnesia, often considered one of the scariest games of all time, the originalResident Evil 2, andSilent Hill 4: The Room. However, it may have found itself on the list and in the spot it’s in simply because of its name recognition.RE4is one of the most popular games in the series, after all, and it has been re-released numerous times.
SinceResident Evil 4’s original launch in 2005, Capcom has ported to nearly every platform imaginable, with theupcomingResident Evil 4remakebringing the game to the latest gaming hardware. It seems Capcom wants a version ofResident Evil 4available to play on nearly every platform imaginable, but hopefully some of these other notable horror games get a similar treatment.
