Taking the top spot with 157.68 million units sold, PlayStation 2 remains the most commercially successful console to date, followed by theNintendo DS, which came in close-second with 154.9 million units. In third place was the Game Boy, which sold 118.69 million units, while the PlayStation 4 took fourth place with a respectable 109.86 million units. Fifth place was taken by the original PlayStation, with 102.5 million units, while sixth went to the Wii, which scored a whopping 101.64 million units. It’s no doubt an interesting lineup and says a lot about both Sony and Nintendo’s ability to develop truly medium-defining pieces of hardware.

The bottom of the list also reveals some interesting insights, showcasing which consoles didn’t manage to make their dent in the games industry. Interestingly,Dreamcastranked lowest, scoring only 8.2 million units, while the Sega Saturn barely scrapes above it with 8.82 million units. Ranking above both of those is the Game Gear, which secured 10.62 million units, followed shockingly by the Wii U, which only managed to sell 13.97 million units. As for the other two modern consoles, while they might not be pulling the numbers that Sony is with the PlayStation 4, they far from scored badly. The Nintendo Switch came in at number 13, which isn’t terrible considering the console launched in 2017. It scored a decent 55.89 million units.

The Xbox One, on the other hand, found itself in 17th place with 47.35 million units. It’s far from a disappointing result financially, however, it’s clear the Xbox hasn’t had the best generation when compared to both Nintendo and Sony’s incredibly impressive numbers. The Xbox Series Xwill hopefully make up for the console’s lackluster previous generation, with new features, better exclusives, and enhanced hardware.
