The revival of Sega’s old 2D beat ‘em up series,Streets of Rage, was met with plenty of fanfare from fans when it was announced. Said fanfare only got louder whenStreets of Rage 4released, with some considering itone of the best ever entriesin the genre, managing to be a delightful throwback and a modern take on the series. But while developer/publisher Dotemu could have left things there, it will instead be updating the game with all-new content.

DLC forStreets of Rage 4was announced last August and, after months of silence, Dotemu has released a new trailer to explain what exactly fans can expect from it. Firstly, the DLC is titled Mr. X Nightmare, named after the original main antagonist of the series. Since he died afterStreets of Rage 3, his two children served as the villains ofStreets of Rage 4.

The name wasactually leaked a couple of weeks ago, prompting theories that Mr. X himself would return as a playable character. Turns out that’s not quite the case, as it actually involves Axel and his allies undergoing special training using an AI program made from the remnants of Mr. X’s brain.

The DLC will include threeadditional playable characters, bringing the roster up to 15. The first of them being Estel Aguirre, a Special Forces officer who, in the main game, served as a recurring boss fight. The other two characters are shrouded in mystery, with only a pair of silhouettes to indicate who they could be.

Aside from the new characters, there will be a new Survival mode which will offer weekly challenges, new weapons to use (like a swordfish), new enemies to fight, and new moves for the characters. In fact, players will even have the option to customize each of the characters’ movesets in order to build their own fighting styles.

Dotemu also advertises new music tracks as well, courtesy of popular composer Tee Lopes. Anyone who doesn’t recognize the name may instead recognize his work on the soundtrack forSonic Maniaand his contributions toTeam Sonic RacingandMonster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. A separate free update will release alongside it too and come with its own extra content.

Dotemu is certainly keeping itself busy, as it’s currently working on another 2D side-scrolling beat ‘em up based on the originalTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlescartoon. CalledShredder’s Revenge, it’s also something of a successor to the 1989 arcade game and its announcement trailer has already won the hearts of fans.

Streets of Rage 4is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
