The Netflix show includes its fair share of violence in addition to the horror elements it brings to the small screen. With the premiere ofthe newest season ofStranger Things, Netflix executives have decided to add a trigger warning to the series premiere, which comes after the school shooting that occurred on May 24th at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, which ended in the tragic loss of 21 people — 19 being children and 2 being staff members. The trigger warning will appear for Netflix’s US viewers, before the season recap that plays at the beginning ofStranger Things 4,prior to the first episode’s opening sequence that could be found disturbing.
ThefirstStranger Thingsseason 4 sequencewas released prior to the new season’s debut as a final teaser. The eight-minute first look graphically displays a massacre and shows the dead bodies of multiple children, with a lot of blood included, which is why Netflix chose to add the disclaimer message. The description of the warning reads, “Warning: Contains graphic violence involving children,” and the streaming platform has also added a disturbing images note within the show’s rating advisory section. The show also has a trigger warning for flashing/strobe lights, for those who struggle with sensitivity and epilepsy.
The studio’s choice to add this warning message was a smart one, especially in the wake of recent events considering the extremely graphic nature of the opening sequence ofthe first episode ofStranger Things 4.However, considering the show displays a great amount of gun-related violence throughout its duration, it might be in the studio’s best interest to add these messages to each episode that includes these images to help protect its viewers.
Stranger Thingsseason 4, volume 1 is available now on Netflix for streaming, and the final set of episodes (volume 2) will be released on July 1st, 2022.
