With dozens upon dozens of craftable tools, structures, and equipment, the developer ofStardew Valleyoffers players innumerable ways to build and customize the farm of their dreams. This level of personalization and narrative freedom gives the game significant replay value, and the chance to explore new friendships, crafts, and designs with each playthrough.
However, with so many different craftable items, it can sometimes be difficult to know where to obtain the resources needed to craft these items, and what tools will need to be prepared to harvest the resources. Demystifying what these resources are and where to obtain them will go a long way in helping playersget the most out ofStardew Valley.
Updated June 01, 2025, by Usama Ali:Not only did Update 1.6 add exciting new content, but it also significantly expanded the crafting possibilities in Stardew Valley. Crafting is an incredibly important aspect of the game, and it allows players to use the resources they gather from various activities and turn them into valuable goods. We’ve updated this list with a few more basic crafting resources that players will definitely need in their farming journey in Stardew Valley, along with details of where they can get them.
16Radioactive Ore
Radioactive Oreis a unique resource that can be farmed from bright green Radioactive Nodes. However, these nodes do not appear in the Mines under normal conditions. Instead, players can only find these Radioactive Nodes during the Danger in the Deep quest. Similar to the Mines, Mr. Qi can offer the “Skull Cavern Invasion” quest. While active, the Skull Cavern also becomes more dangerous and spawns Radioactive Nodes.
After completing the “Danger in the Deep” quest at least once, aShrine of Challengewill appear on level 120 of the Mines. Interacting with this shrine will permanently toggle the Mines to their “dangerous” state. Once active, Radioactive Nodes will spawn throughout the Mines
Radioactive Nodes function like any other ore node. Simply use the pickaxe to mine them. Radioactive Ore can be smelted into Radioactive Bars, or used in crafting Magic Bait and Hyper Speed-Gro.
15Bone Fragment
Bone Fragments are another common resource that is often overlooked in the early game, but becomes surprisingly useful as players progress. There are a few different ways to get Bone Fragments, like destroying Bone Nodes onGinger Island, destroying crates and barrels in Skull Cavern, digging in Artifact Spots, and panning. Certain monsters have a chance to drop Bone Fragments when defeated, namely Skeletons and Lava Lurks.
Bone Fragments have a variety of uses, making them more valuable than they initially seem. They’re used in crafting the Bone Mill, Ostrich Incubator, Challenge Bait, Thorns Ring, and even different fertilizers.
14Moss
Mossis a green, plant-like crafting resource that was introduced in theStardew Valley1.6 update. It grows on the trunks of mature Oak, Maple, and Pine Trees, as well as two types of Green Rain Trees, during all seasons except Winter. The chance of moss growing on a tree each day depends on the weather and season:
To collect theMoss inStardew Valley, players simply need to interact with the moss-covered tree with any tool. There’s no need to chop down the entire tree. Each tree typically yields 1-2 pieces of Moss. It is used in a bunch of crafting recipes, likeChallenge Bait, Blue Grass Starter, and even the Statue of Blessings.
During the Green Rain weather event in the Summer, moss becomes significantly more abundant. Almost every eligible tree will be covered in moss. As such, these events are the best time to gather large quantities of Moss.
13Fiber
Likely the first resource players will encounter when starting a new game,Fibercan be gatheredusing a scythefrom the numerous weeds scattered around the player’s farm.
Additionally, if the player selects the “Wilderness Farm” in the character creation tab, they can encounter “Wilderness Golems,” which have a high chance of dropping fiber when defeated. If this approach is taken, any damage-dealing tool will suffice, but a sword or better is recommended.
12Wood
One of the more abundant resources inStardew Valley,Woodcan be gathered through any number of means. Early in the game, wood can be found scattered on the ground near trees and stumps.
Additionally, wood can be obtained by chopping down trees using an ax orpurchased from the Carpenter’s Shopbetween 9 AM and 5 PM for 10 gold apiece.
11Hardwood
Once players have upgraded their ax beyond the entry-level ax, rarer crafting materials will become available to them.A prime example of this is hardwood, a crafting material that can only be obtained once the player has obtained a copper or steel ax.
Using these upgraded tools on Tree Stumps or Old Logs will yield anywhere between two and eightHardwood, respectively. Hardwood can also be obtained (though rarely) in chests and barrels found in the mine.
10Coal
Of all the numerous crafting materials available to the player,Coalholds the unique distinction of havingthe most possible ways of being obtained. For starters, breaking rocks with a pickaxe has a small chance of yielding coal, as well as being a possible drop from an extracted geode.
Coal can also be purchased from the Blacksmith for 100 gold per lump or obtained through recycling. For a more hands-off approach, players can simply find coal washed up on the shores of the beach during Fall, or through burning 10 pieces of wood in a Charcoal Kiln.
9Clay
Clayis one of a few resources withnumerous different ways to obtain it. The first one players are likely to encounter is when they begin tilling the ground for the first time, with every space of regular ground having a chance to yield clay.
Additionally, using a hoe on the ground with worms or twigs can double (or even triple) clay yields on that space. Clay can also be discovered by smashing geodes at the Blacksmith’s shop and smashing rocks with a regular pickaxe or better.
8Stone
Perhaps the most straightforward of allStardew Valleycrafting materials,Stonecan be found very early on in-game by smashing rocks with a pickaxe. These can be found on the player’s farm, in the cave, and in great abundance in the mine.
Additionally, stone can be purchased from the Carpenter’s Shop for 20 gold per stone for those flush with cash.
7Fire Quartz
Another crafting resource players will need is the bright red mineralFire Quartz. It’s relatively useful, which makes it a worthwhile resource for players to collect during their mining expeditions.
The main way to get Fire Quartz is by mining in the Mines orSkull Cavern. It is most common onlevels 81-119of the standard Mines. It can appear in regular rocks and Magma or Omni Geodes. Occasionally, players can find Fire Quartz as a reward from opening treasure chests obtained while fishing.
Fire Quartz is used to craft the Dehydrator and the Slime Egg-Press. It can also be smelted to makeRefined Quartz. It also makes a good gift for almost all the villagers, except Leah, Linus, and Pierre.
