TheSplinter Cellseries is often regarded as one of the best stealth video game franchises. As fans of the Ubisoft series look for any hint at thereturn ofSplinter Cell,  someone did some research about just how deadly Sam Fisher, the series' protagonist, has been throughout his games.

Reddit user u/TK-576 created a post that calculated the kill count for Sam Fisher across theSplinter Cellgames. To get an accurate count, the user played through each game and only counted the kills of Sam Fisher that were a part of a cinematic or kills that were 100% unavoidable. Between the first four games in the series,Splinter Cell(2002) andDouble Agent(2006), Sam Fisher only kills 21 enemies combined. However,Splinter Cell: Convictionups the ante by about 3,900%.

InSplinter Cell: Conviction, the gameplay shiftedaway from the total stealth approach. Sam Fisher kills 418 people in 2010’sConviction, a massive spike compared to the other games in the series. Gone are the avoidable kills. Gone are the total stealth approaches to gameplay. Instead,Convictionforces Fisher to kill, and kill a lot.

The creativity and player agency in theSplinter Cellgames are part of the reason people enjoy them. ManypreferSplinter CelloverMetal Gear Solid, but for the most part, both allow the player to approach situations with the style they prefer. WithConviction, this wasn’t the case. Although the game was enjoyable, many were turned off by the lack of true stealth, as the game focused on action. Thankfully, withSplinter Cell: Blacklist, sneaky gameplay returned and the game can be beaten without killing a single soul.

WithoutConviction, Fisher would not be much of a killer compared to action-adventures likeUncharted. Even in theSplinter CellandGhost Reconcrossovers, Sam Fisher only is forced to kill a few enemies. It seems as if Ubisoft has understood that players want options with how they approach attacking and avoiding with Fisher in his games.

WhetherSplinter Cell is rebooted with the next-gen, or whether the series is continued, it is likely that the games will continue to focus on stealth.Convictioncould go down as the only time Sam Fisher went haywire and killed hundreds, as over 95% of his career kills have come from that single game.

Splinter Cell: Convictionis available for Xbox 360, PC, and mobile devices.
