When Kirsten Dunst was cast to play Mary-Jane Watson in the first Tobey Maguire-ledSpider-Man, the producers had one big change they wanted the actress to make. It turns out that they wanted Dunst to get her teeth fixed.
Dunst was 19-years-old when she was cast as Peter Parker’s love interest in Sam Raimi’sSpider-Man. She ended up making appearances in all three oftheSpider-Manfilms that starred Maguireas the titular character. But apparently, before she started shooting some of the most famous scenes in superhero cinematic history, she had to deal with the people in charge wanting her to have some corrective surgery done.

In a recent interview withThe Independent, the formerSpider-Manactresssaid that she had no idea she was being taken to the dentist one day, until the car she was riding in pulled up to the office. She said the producers talked about how the famous upside-down kiss with Parker would look quite a bit better if her teeth were straightened. However, Dunst said that once she was told where they were and what they were doing there, she refused to get out of the car. She responded that she liked her teeth.
Dunst added that she felt empowered to take a stand and hold out against the pressure because she knew she had another famous director and performer in her corner. Sofia Coppola had taken the actress under her wing when she was 16-years-old and gave her the first big break she had in Hollywood withThe Virgin Suicides. Dunst felt that if Coppola was good with her somewhat crooked smile, then she was good with it as well.
In the end, Dunst appears to have won the argument and got to keep her teeth however she wanted them. It turns out that audiences didn’t seem to have a problem with them, asSpider-ManandSpider-Man 2grossed $821 million and $789 million respectively. Those first films likely helpedmake theSpider-Manfranchise so popularthat it was rebooted not once, but twice. Now there is a clamoring from some fans for both Dunst and Maguire to make appearances in the newestSpider-Man: No Way Home.
Whether or not either or both characters might appear in what is expected to be a movie focusing on the multiverse has been a subject of great conjecture for some time now. At the moment, neither have been confirmed asreprising theirSpider-Manroles.
Spider-Man: No Way Homeis scheduled to be released in theaters on July 10, 2025.
