It can be hard to stand out in a saturated market, such as the current market for battle royale video games. Yet, with somegood reviews in its corner, that’s whatSpellbreakis trying to do.

What setsSpellbreakapart is its unique take on combat. The game trades firearms and armor for spells and runes. While most battle royales focus on safety, ambush, and caution,Spellbreakembraces fast-paced spellslinging. So far this focus seems to have worked in the game’s favor, but it will need more to stay relevant in an otherwise flooded market. That’s whySpellbreakis adding new elements, one of which has the potential to make it truly shine.

In a recent Twitter post,Spellbreakdevelopers announced they are rolling out some new additions on October 22. A few of these stand out from the pack, but they’ve all beenteased by the game’s roadmap before. One is a 9v9 clash mode, in which two teams of nine players will battle head-to-head. This is far smaller than typical games, but potentially more ferocious than the traditional, drawn-out battle royale style. More importantly, the game is adding the start of a story mode, beginning with a Prologue.

One of the weaknesses of most battle royale titles is the lack of an overt narrative. This is true for many multiplayer-focused titles, but not all of them. Most games in theCall of Dutyseries have story missions that focus on cinematic, engaging gameplay that differs from the frenetic multiplayer. In this way, the single and multiplayer complement each other well. IfSpellbreak, already one of Twitch’s fastest-growing games, can add an engaging, fun story on top of its gameplay, there’s a chance it could have real staying power.

Spellbreakalready has the tools to make a really good story mode.Spellbreak’s modular magic system is perfect for building unique story challenges around, as different obstacles and enemies could be made to help players learn to master different classes. While thebeginner-friendly Stoneshaper classis easy to pick up, aMetal Gear Solid 3The End-style fight to help master the more difficult Frostborn could be a fun addition.

On the other hand,Spellbreakmay do what many battle royale games attempt and create a lackluster story mode as a quick distraction from the meat of its experience. Hopefully this is not the case, and the story mode becomesessential forSpellbreakbeginnersand veterans alike. At this point, only time will tell.

Spellbreakis available for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
