At The Game Awards 2022, a new trailer forThe Lords of the Fallenwas shown, revealing the two monster-filled worlds the game takes place in. The title, which was originally believed to beLords of the Fallen 2,was formally announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022 with the updated nameThe Lords of the Fallen.
The originalLords of the Fallenwas released in 2014 as one of the first prominent games in the Soulslike genre to not be developed by famedElden RingandDark Soulsdeveloper FromSoftware. While the game’s developer Deck13 went on to makeThe Surgeseries, publisher CI Games would begin looking for another studio to make a sequel toLords of the Fallenin 2015, eventually assigning the project to its own subsidiary studio Hexworks. Little information on the game would surface until its formal announcement at Gamescom 2022.

Viewers of The Game Awards 2022 were given a new look atThe Lords of the Fallenwith the premiere of a new gameplay trailer. Captured in-game, this trailer gives hints about the game’s setting of two different worlds, which were viewable to the protagonist through a lamp. Various enemies are given the spotlight, including spectral horrors, multi-limbed monsters, and boss-like wizards using both magic and melee weapons. It evokes the body horror aesthetics seen inFromSoftware’s PS4 exclusiveBloodborneas well as the fantasy settings seen inElden Ringand theDark Soulsseries.
The trailer is narrated byHouse of the Dragonactress Milly Alcock, whose narration hints towards the game story revolving around the protagonist’s quest to overthrow the god Adyr, a character from the first game. Unlike theGamescom trailer forThe Lords of the Fallen, this one seems to have an original score that fittingly matched the game’s horror tones. Different locations ranging from caves, castles, and rundown towns are featured, many of which are shown in two different forms depending on whether the player character is using their lamp.
The works of FromSoftware have clearly been an influence on both games in theLords of the Fallenseries. Though the Japanese development studio already had a lengthy catalog through theshooter mecha seriesArmored Coreand theKing’s Fieldseries of RPGs, it was not until the success ofDark Soulsin 2011 that the studio would become known worldwide. Although other games such asStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderand theNiohseries followed in the Soulslike genre, they were all preceded by the originalLords of the Fallen. This was the game that helped open the door for studios to create their own take on whatDark SoulsandDemon’s Soulspopularized. Now, over eight years after its release, CI Games and Hexworks are bringing the series back at an opportune time following the success ofElden Ring. It is only a matter of time until gamers see whatThe Lords of the Fallenhas to offer.
The Lords of the Fallenis currently in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
