Usually receiving an inheritance is associated with financial gain, but oneThe Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimplayer has received a negative sum from one of the game’s famously determined couriers. Regardless of rain, snow, or dragonfire,Skyrimcouriers are fiercely dedicated to their occupationand are considered inescapable. They also have a habit of showing up at the most inopportune moments, eager to deliver their charge and be on their way. Unfortunately they don’t always bear good news.
Couriers have been known to keep players waiting for in-game weeks to advance certain quest lines, but they can also be amazingly efficient. In a peculiar occurrence,aSkyrimplayer received an inheritance letter almost immediatelyafter seeing Whiterun blacksmith Adrianne Avenicci drop dead for no apparent reason. It turns out that Adrianne’s death was caused by the player taking over the forge she was working at, causing her to respawn high enough above the ground to die from fall damage.

A Reddit user by the name of rubyravioli has shared a screenshot of an inheritance letter that bequeaths them a negative sum of gold Septims. The usual levy taken by the Jarl’s court is also a negative amount. One of the top comments on the post points out that this is probably due to a mod, with the giveaway being that the name on the inheritance letter is simply “Citizen.” This was later confirmed by rubyravioli, who reveals that they are using theSkyrimPopulated Cities mod which adds new NPCs to the game to make towns a little more lively.
While the surprising negative inheritance is the result of a mod,Skyrimfans still found it amusing. “On my way to steal 200 gold worth of items from Balgruuf’s house” wrote Jwchibi, while another comment suggested that the deceased may have had some outstanding warrants and that the Dragonborn had to cover the court costs. Negative inheritance might be yet another reasonSkyrimplayers attempt to avoid the courier, however the NPC’s legendary tenacity arguably makes this an exercise in futility.
The contribution of modders to the enduring popularity of the gamecannot be understated, especially asSkyrimapproaches its 20th anniversary. There is some speculation that it may reach this milestone beforeThe Elder Scrolls 6is released whether fans like it or not. At this stage it is impossible to tell without official word from Bethesda, but for the moment it seems likeSkyrimfans are still getting plenty mileage out of the game and are content to wait for the most part.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimis available for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
