In a video on the subReddit, user Mr0range_crafts shows off his diorama of an iconic battle early inSkyrim. The clear cube contains a set of images and textures from the gamedepicting the fight against Mirmulnir, the first dragon players will encounter. The sharp outline of the creature soaring over Whiterun’s Western Watchtower, set against the cloud-capped mountains and autumnal grasses of the Skyrim tundra involves viewers in the fantasy the diorama creates. Moreover, the iron sword and shield in the foreground thoroughly immerses viewers in the iconic landscape and removes the need for a nameplate altogether.

Reddit commenters are immediately able to identify the scene, praising Mr0range_crafts for their creativity. One user, named guifvieira, reminisces that ‘you never forget’ your first dragon, a testament not only toSkyrim’s awe-inspiring battle but to the Mr0range’s impeccable ability to recreate the moment from just a few still images and a lot of hard work.

Meanwhile, other users worriedly ask ifSkyrimis now considered retro, like the other games that Mr0range_crafts has created dioramas for. Though Redditors are assured that older games in the franchiseare far more retro, now thatSkyrimhas just celebrated its 10th anniversary, its retro status may yet be reinstated.

WithThe Elder Scrolls 6now in developmentat Bethesda Game Studios,Skyrimis set to be usurped as the developers’ latest fantasy epic. Regardless,Skyrim’s place in the pop culture zeitgeist will remain intact for decades to come, and will likely be looked back on as fondly as other entries in theElder Scrollsfranchise, likeOblivionandMorrowind. Hopefully, the community will continue to see such a wealth of imagination and creativity far into the future.

Mr0range_crafts is a prolific craftsman and has developed many similar dioramas spanning a multitude of video games, includingUndertale,HaloandThe Legend of Zelda. In fact, they’ve even createdan impressive rendition of an earlier Bethesda game,The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall, and have an Etsy where they sell their creations and offer commissions.
