This news comes on the eve of The Game Awards 2020; interesting timing given thatRuined Kingwas first announced at last year’s ceremony. League of Legendsis an incredibly popular multiplayer series, withWorlds 2020 seeing millions of concurrent viewers, so a foray into single player for the universe came as a surprise. Unlike the multiplayer online battle arena it’s based on,Ruined Kingwill focus on an immersive turn-based RPG format. Players can configure their party ofLeaguechampions while exploring locations of Runeterra like Bilgewater and the Shadow Isles.
According to Riot Forge, 2020 has seen a host of obstacles hindering its original plans forRuined King. This is not shocking given theCOVID-19 pandemic has led to many major game delays. With the changing timeline, it sounds like there will need to be adjustments made for the upcoming title. It is clear Riot Forge wants to release a project that lives up to the vision of developers Airship Syndicate.
While this may come as a disappointment to some, Riot Forge mentions it wants to be transparent about development. Too often game developers experiences put out information that can result in unrealistic expectations or unfinished releases. Games likeLeague of LegendsandValorant, one of the best FPS games of 2020, have seen positive reception, so it makes sense that Riot Forge would delayRuined Kingto avoid letting down its community.
Riot Games has a clear focus on multiplayer gaming, and a single-player experience could just be part of itsinitiative to grow its playerbase. Riot Forge is a publishing label within Riot Games that works with third-party developers, and while Airship Syndicate does have experience with spin-off games, living up toLeague of Legendscould pose a challenge. While fans will need to wait a little bit longer forRuined King, they can take solace in the fact that Riot Forge is being transparent about its progress.
Ruined King: A League of Legends Storyis in development for 2021 on the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
