The Batmanstar Robert Pattinson is often a breath of fresh air among the rest of Hollywood’s offerings. That’s not to say most celebrities are vapid or anything like that (only some of them. A healthy chunk). But Pattinson carries a vibe with him not unlike a retiree driving through a church parking lot with their windows down blasting Slayer. It’s not malicious, it’s just who he is, and bless him for it.
Whether it comes from himendlessly bashing theTwilightmovieseven while still starring in them or creating his own short film about just wanting to find a New York hot dog (no, that’s not a joke. Look it up, seriously), Pattinson’s whole deal seems to be marching to the beat of his own drum. That quality came through yet again at the premiere for his highly-anticipated filmThe Batman. Donning an outfit reminiscent of a deflated David Byrne, he took to the red carpet with the sort of confidence the rest of the world should strive for, and he inspired some interesting comments from the unlikeliest of places.

After the Warner Bros. UK Twitter account shared a clip ofPattinson in his suit cloak alongside co-star Zoë Kravitzat the premiere, a collection of NBA fans swooped in to make a hilarious new joke while arguably beating it to death all at the same time. As background for those unfamiliar with NBA lore, in times of old (such as the ancient era of the mid-2000s), lots of newbie hopefuls to the league would wear baggy suits while being recruited to their respective teams. Hey, everything was baggy in those days. Suits might as well follow, uh, suit.
So of course, the comments came out comparingrepeatedTwilightcritic Pattinsonto those magical, simpler times. The video got shared around with quote tweets like “Rob out here dressed like he just got drafted by the nuggets in 2002” and “Why does Robert Pattinson look like a 2003 NBA draft pick?” Frankly, it’s a pretty funny comparison, and one that Pattinson himself probably enjoyed. The man has got to be used to getting reactions by now, as someone who specifically chose to live his favorite life regardless of what the world thinks. So harmless jokes like this may be validating more than degrading.
Pattinson has always been a passionate actor, at least when he’s doing something he likes. He even lists somespecific comics that inspired his take on Batmanfor the film. That sort of drive and character is something that would be great to see more of in Hollywood, especially at events where it seems like only women are encouraged to dress creatively while men get their choice of black suit or other black suit. In a world where people are finally beginning to understand the broad scope of the gender spectrum, now would be the perfect time to get more people breaking out of the perceived norms that have been in place for generations.
But gender discussions aside, moments like this make the anticipation forThe Batmanall the more sweet. Not sinceChristopher Nolan’sDark Knighttrilogyhas the moviegoing public been so intrigued by what comes next for the caped crusader and his rogues' gallery. With everything else going on right now, it’s good to have these sorts of opportunities to breathe while being confused nicely for once.
The Batmanbegins showing in theaters on March 4th, 2022.
