Summary
Red Dead Redemption 2is an expansive open world, full of dark mysteries that emerge through perhaps the most unlikely strangers - individuals who, at first glance, defy expectations as the purveyors of such enigmatic stories. Froma mad scientist inRDR2who created a robot and passed away, to an entire athletics team from Blackwater having gone missing, there is no shortage of detective work in store for players. While some stories are created entirely anew, some mysteries are based on real-world events, or people.
This mystery kicks off with a newspaper article. In the Blackwater Ledger No. 69, a distressing report details the disappearance of the local sports team, the Blackwater Athletics. The article reveals that members of the Blackwater Athletic Club vanished after setting out for a group run from the northern edge of town. Despite exhaustive search efforts, they remain elusive. The report initially speculated on an Indian kidnapping, but this theory is debunked, given the absence of any recent incidents involving theft of livestock or abductions by tribes. The truth of this mystery inRed Dead Redemption 2, though, stands out as possibly the darkest of them all.

The Dark Mystery Behind The Disappearance of Blackwater’s Athletics Team
Uncovering the tragic fate of the team is relatively easy for players. To the west of the town lies a mass grave, revealing the bodies of ten men alongside dismembered limbs. Each player can be identified by their uniforms, and while there are ten bodies, none show signs of missing limbs. A disturbing revelation unfolds as dismembered limbs arranged to form a distinct “B” lay in a pile of dirt near the grave, presumably representingBlackwater Athletics. Despite initial suspicions in Blackwater of a Native American assault, the truth turns out to be far stranger and darker than anticipated.
The incident involving the Blackwater Athletics Team echoes the real-world Los Maniceros massacre, where twelve members of a Colombian amateur football team were kidnapped, and only one person survived. Some claim that the National Liberation Army of Colombia was responsible for the deaths, but to this day, the motive remains unknown. InRed Dead Redemption 2, this connectionbecomes apparent due to the reference to the National Liberation Army leader as El Payaso, or “the clown,” which explains the presence of clown masks on two of the victims in the game.

The Person Behind Blackwater’s Athletics Team’s Murder
In the world ofRed Dead Redemption 2,there’s quite a story behind the murders. While playing the American Dreams mission, players come across three bodies with disturbing graffiti nearby. If they explore further, they discover a map leading toEdmund Lowry Jr.’s hideoutbeneath Lucky’s Cabin. In this rather creepy basement, players find articles about Lowry’s killings in the West Elizabeth region, coinciding with the Blackwater team’s disappearance. The basement also holds another chilling sight that basically confirms the killer outright — a human “B” like the one back at the Blackwater crime scene.
There is no definitive way to get justice for the Blackwater Athletics Team, at least not by pursuing Lowry. If players engage him with their knife, they will start a showdown where they have to fight off a similar, grim fate. If they attempt to bring Lowryto the Sheriff’s office in anRDR2townwill result in an aggressive attack where the player will be forced to shoot him. Though the Blackwater victims aren’t as mutilated, articles reveal that Lowry used different methods, including drowning.
Lowry managed to take down an entire athletics team, and there were no indications of stab wounds or bullet holes on their bodies. Although his notes imply drowning, certain fans theorize that Lowry might have poisoned their water.
