Kaguya-sama: Love Is Warhas a lot of fun, hilarious charactersthat give life to this devious romantic comedy series. While the Student Council President Miyuki Shirogane and Vice President Kaguya Shinomiya are the central duo of the series, there are many other characters that have quickly become fan favorites.

One such character is Yu Ishigami, the surly and antisocial Treasurer of the Student Council. Despite being introduced somewhat later than the rest of the main cast, Ishigami quickly became a fan favorite, especially as his character is more thoroughly explored. Here are the reasons why Yu Ishigami is so beloved by the fandom.
5His Cynicism
Yu Ishigami’s first impressionhas him come off as an introverted geekwho despises “normies,” especially those that engage openly in public displays of affection. He has a jaded outlook on life and constantly expects the worst, a tendency caused by traumatic events that occurred in his past. As a result, Ishigami is quite a cynical character that can only see the downsides of every situation, at least in his first few appearances. While this is not the entirety of Ishigami’s personality, it is certainly these aspects that stand out the most when we first see him.
While Ishigami’s negative personality may seem grating to those in the series, to the fans he is a great source of hilarity and a strong contrast to more bubbly characters like Fujiwara. Even then, if Ishigami was all-negative, it would almost certainly start to make him a little obnoxious, but he does get better and show more sides of himself as the series goes on.
4His Relatability
Unlike Shirogane,who is a genius at working hard, and Shinomiya, an elite princess from one of the most powerful families in Japan, Ishigami is a rather average student, despite his own wealth. Despite his own skill at accounting, he gets fairly average grades at school, and his lack of self-confidence means that he struggles with connecting to others, leaving him with very few friends. Other times, his lack of social skills can cause him to come off as creepy, which only makes his reputation worse.

Nevertheless, these traits make him one of the most relatable characters in this series' cast. Ishigami’s struggles with his own awkwardness and his attempts to build up his own confidence resonate strongly with the audience, and his troubles with bullying and inability to connect to others draw many to his personal storyline.
3His Snark And Humor
Kaguya-sama: Love Is Warhas a reputation for beingone of the most hilarious romantic comediesin modern anime. Every main character has a personality trait or tick that is frequently exploited for humor, and Ishigami is no different. Ishigami’s negative personality and general introverted nature are often played for laughs and jokes, but that is not all there is to his character.
When it comes to playing the straight man during the many shenanigans that the Student Council end up engaging in, Ishigami actually turns out to have quite the dry sense of humor, with a witty sensibility that often plays on his dark and jaded outlook. Most of Ishigami’s lines can range between being hilariously grim or ridiculously negative, and there’s a small amount of schadenfreude in seeing Ishigami put into situations that clearly make him uncomfortable. Ishigami might be one of the funniest characters in the series, and that is saying something.
2His Altruism
Despite his spiteful personality and general negative attitude, Ishigami is actually quite the selfless and righteous person. While much of that kindness has certainly eroded over the years due to certain events in his past, Ishigami remains a soft-hearted person, though he keeps that side of himself locked up inside.

Ishigami’s altruism is not initially apparent from his first few appearances, which is why it’s always a surprise when he suddenly does something out of the kindness of his heart. The main recipient of most of his kind gestures is usually fellow Student Council member Miko Iino, though he has certainly offered help to not only the rest of the student council, but also several of his classmates as well.Kaguya-samabeing largely a comedy means that this side of Ishigami doesn’t show up very often,but it is still a very important part of his character.
1His Character Development
Ishigami is more than just a side character that isonly around to enhance the humorof any silly situation happening in the Student Council meeting room. While he does come off as such, he slowly gains more of the spotlight before becoming a central character in his own arc, a story that revealed the sequence of events that turned him into such a grim and gloomy character.
Ishigami’s backstory certainly gives a lot of insight into why his personality is the way it is, but what’s more important is the character development that Ishigami begins to go through. While he can never truly get away from his awkward and surly personality, he begins to make strides and become more outgoing, making connections with more people outside of the Student Council. Ishigami is a character that gains more dimensions as the series goes on, and that makes him one of the most interesting characters to watch inKaguya-sama: Love Is War.
