Insomniac Games has certainly had its hands full over the last couple of years. From 2018’sMarvel’s Spider-Manto its well-loved 2020 sequelSpider-Man: Miles Moralesand this year’sRatchet and Clank: Rift Apart,Insomniac has been delivering hit after hit of late, but one property has been left mostly untouched since its release in the far-flung past of 2014:Sunset Overdrive. That could be about to change, however.
Sunset Overdriveoriginally released as an Xbox One exclusive in 2014 before coming to Windows PC a few years later. For a long time the Xbox was the only option for any fans wanting to take out some energy drink-fueled mutants, though Sony has been dropping the odd hint about the possibility ofthe game coming to PlayStation ever since they acquired Insomniac in 2019. The question of a sequel has long been up in the air, although recent comments from Insomniac’s creative director lend credence to the idea that it could be on the cards in the future.

In an interview with GQ magazine, creative director Marcus Smith responded to queries about theSunset Overdrivefranchise by saying that there was “nothing really stopping us” from making another game or bringing the original to Sony consoles. He went on to add that he felt there were “a lot of stories that can be told in that universe” and that he “would love to return to it.”
On their own, the comments might seem fairly innocuous, but combined withSony’s recently registered trademark forSunset Overdrive, it seems a return to form for the cult hit may be coming soon. Whether this will take the form of a sequel is not clear, but it seems fairly safe to say that the original game will at least be coming to Sony consoles at some point, something that fans have been anticipating ever since Sony acquired Insomniac.
With that said, Smith’s comments makethe possibility of aSunset Overdrivesequelthat much more believable. If the original creators feel that the game’s world still has potential as yet untapped, there’s little to stop them from returning to it and bringing fans their long-awaited next entry in the franchise.
This isn’t even the first time Insomniac has intimated their desire to make a sequel to their beloved game: a few years agoInsomniac CEO Ted Price told IGNthat he saw the making of a sequel as “an opportunity to deliver something to fans that’s significantly better than the original, and that’s something that I think we would love to do someday.” However, he also described it as “a timing challenge [and] a bandwidth challenge,” preemptively echoing Smith’s comments that the only thing stopping them from jumping in with sequel development was that they “have a lot of really exciting things in [their] future.” Still, it’ll be interesting to see what the company is working ononceRatchet and Clank: Rift Apartis out the door.
Sunset Overdriveis currently available on PC and Xbox One.
