Summary
Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesishas recently pushed a big December update intended to ease the barrier to entry for both new and returning players, with significant boosts to XP gains, easier sub-class leveling, and a streamlined gearing experience throughout the leveling process. Since the game has moved the series over to a more open-world MMO format, it’s more important than ever for players to have a minimally tedious experience leading up to what is arguably the game’s main attraction: its incredibly deep customization systems for characters, equipment, and even living spaces. A common saying among fans of MMOs is that “the true endgame is fashion,” and this couldn’t be more true forPhantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis.
Game Rant interviewed Series Producer Yuya Kimura amid the game’s December update and its 2.5-year celebration event, and he spoke about how the game’s best-in-class character customization is one of its most important features. He acknowledged that letting players express themselves creatively is a great way for them to develop an attachment to their characters and that coming up with new ways to express their creativity is often just as powerful of a draw as the hunt for better loot.

Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis Has One Of The Deepest Character Creators Around
Whatever other opinions players hold for PSO2 NGS, it’s almost universally well-regarded for having one of thebest character creators in gaming. There are a staggering number of ways that players can fine-tune their avatars, often with a high degree of granularity. Players spend a great deal of time replicating their favorite anime characters or video game protagonists, and the system even allows for some downright goofy-looking creations if they choose. No two characters look alike, and seeing how each player chooses to uniquely express themselves is core to the game’s social aspect.
Throughout the PSO series as an online multiplayer game, we believe that the ultimate concept that applies universally is the deep affection players have for their own characters.

Players develop a love for their characters by enjoying their combat animations, movements, interactions with friends, story involvement, and their unique attributes. Furthermore, players enjoy strengthening and customizing their characters, including their fashion choices. All of these aspects contribute to the overall experience of loving your own character.
While there are numerous online games that allow character creation, I consider the PSO series to be the most influential in terms of how much motivation one has for their character affects the game’s retention rate.

To achieve this, we prioritize providing extensive character creation options, a science fiction world that accommodates various expressions, and content that emphasizes communication beyond battles. We strive to develop and operate the game with these aspects in mind even on the day-to-day.
Kimura notes that the game’s sci-fi theme also opens a few creative doors for players that aren’t typically seen in other games. A party of players might consist of a transformer with a lion’s mane, a samurai panda,Nier Automata’s 2B, and Geralt of Rivia. The game’s salon system allows players to explore these limitless possibilities with relative ease, and players can save and load their creations from the salon whenever they feel like showing off a new look.
Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis Is Running A Customization-Friendly Event
Recognizing thatcharacter customization is fundamentalto PSO2 NGS, the December update has made the process more accessible particularly to new players. Previously, players had 5 in-game hours to freely customize their characters after creation, and the update has extended this window to 72 in-game hours. This gives plenty of time for players to acquire some more cosmetic items and work them into their creations, possibly getting them a bit more invested in their characters as a result.
By clearing up to Chapter 5, players receive substantial rewards such as a large amount of in-game currency called N-Meseta and obtain a plethora of avatar items. This allows players to enjoy fashion and other aspects while smoothly advancing through their adventures. Speaking of fashion, the period during which players can freely re-edit their body type and other features at the Salon after creating a new character was only 5 in-game hours. We extended this to a cumulative login time of 72 hours.
There’s also a 2.5-year anniversary event running until January 24 that rewards players with loads of N-Meseta to purchase cosmetic items, and players can use the Salon at no cost for the duration of the event. With a streamlined leveling process and tons of customization options to play around with, this event is a great jumping-in point forcreative gamerswith a love for deep customization.
