Summary

The results are in from a recent poll of the most popular characters inPokemon Scarlet and Violet. The poll was conducted by Nintendo DREAM, a gaming magazine published only in Japan, and the results are chafingPokemon Scarlet and Violetfans from other regions.

Nintendo DREAM has been published in Japan since 1996, supporting Nintendo games as they come out. ThePokemon Scarlet and VioletDLC storylineThe Hidden Treasure of Area Zerowrapped up earlier this year, and players have had their favorite characters grow and change in a few different ways, which makes the results of the poll all the more interesting.

In a post on the ResetERA forums, one user translated the poll results and posted only the top ten characters, but also provided information on a few honorable mentions. According to the DREAM poll, the top ten most popular characters inPokemon Scarlet and Violetare as follows:

Version specificPokemon Professors Turo and Sadaplaced 36th and 37th, respectively. The thread didn’t appear to offer any reasoning or summary for why voters ranked one candidate over another, but it did attract many forum users with many different opinions on who should be where.

“Real ones know Larry is #1” declared one user, decidedly in the camp of the eternally tired Gym Leader and Elite Four member. “Rika was robbed of the top spot,” another user said, referring to another member of the Elite Four who interviews the player before they can be challenged. But the most common opinions concerned the placement of Kieran, a character introduced in theScarlet and Violet DLC. Kieran, Carmine, and Drayton are all characters introduced in The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, and some fans are theorizing that it’s this recency throwing things off. Others cite thecharacter development Kieran goes through during the DLCfor his high ranking, but still others responded to his popularity in a less than positive fashion.

Parsing the Pokemon Popularity Poll

Users in the thread are curious about what the poll would look like if it was expanded to western audiences, rather than just the readers of Nintendo DREAM. Despite the small sample size the poll does provide an interesting look at how fans have received the newest generation, rather than seeing how much and ofwhich Pokemon trainer fan artcirculates the most. Either way, the presence of so many strong opinions regarding characters fromPokemon Scarletand Violetis a good sign that Game Freak has made some fascinating narrative design choices that fans are passionate about.
