Overwatch 2fans tuning into the Overwatch League Grand Finals were treated to a look at the latest hero. For some time now, fans have known that the character would be a Tank, with Blizzard also confirming that it would be a character players had seen before in the lead-up to the reveal. Naturally, fans assumed it would be Mauga, a character they have been expecting to see as a Tank for years. However,Blizzardhad other ideas, with Ramattra now confirmed as the new hero.

With Twitter teases hinting at both characters, it was always going to be one of them joining the roster, and Ramattra was the one to make the cut. With the character first teased years back in the Storm Rising mission, his debut has also been a long time coming. Still, the addition of Ramattra as the hero shooter’s latest Tank means that Mauga will not be coming toOverwatch 2until the end of 2023 at the earliest, so fans of the character will have to continue waiting.

Why Overwatch 2 Fans Want Mauga To Be Added

Part of the reason for Mauga’s popularity is that he was so close to being added years ago. According to Blizzard, Mauga was originally meant to be the Tank hero released in Sigma’s spot, thoughSigma went on to be the 31st heroinstead. Since work was supposedly done on Mauga, fans have been waiting for Blizzard to go back to the unfinished character and make him playable, with Mauga’s name being brought up for any discussions about new Tanks.

On top of this, fans like Mauga’s personality, as he acts outwardly friendly but can quickly switch to being cruel and violent. Beyond that, his loyalty to Talon and his closeness with the turncoat Baptiste makes for an interesting dynamic that is begging to be explored further. WithOverwatch’s New Blood comicseeing Cassidy attempt to recruit Baptiste, him and Mauga could be on opposite sides in the ongoing conflict. This would naturally lead to a lot of interesting dialogue between the two before matches.

Finally, Mauga’s character design is unique enough thattheOverwatchcommunitybelieves he deserves more than a supporting role. Not only is he massive, making him the perfect option for a Tank, but his long hair with white accents is distinct and helps him to stand out from the other male characters on the roster. Like in his lore appearances, he could use a shield, and he could also wield miniguns like the Talon heavies in Retribution.

Why Overwatch 2’s Mauga is So Far Off

Based on how he is portrayed inOverwatch’s lore, there is no chance that Mauga is a Support or Damage character, as he is too large and aggressive for either role. This means that he is ruled out of the next two character slots, as Blizzard has confirmed that heroes 37 and 38 will both be Support characters. Though this is excellent news for Support players, as the category desperately needs a bigger roster to choose from, Mauga fans will be waiting dozens of weeks for their character to appear - if he even does.

Overwatchseasons last 9 weeks, and heroes are only set to be added every other season. This means that, assuming Mauga is the Tank hero expected to be in the 39th character slot, the earliest he can release is 45 weeks after Ramattra. This puts him at the tail end of 2023 or the very beginning of 2024, meaning that fans of Baptiste’s former ally will be waiting at least another year for his debut. There is no guarantee he will become playable, either, as even though former hero designer Geoff Goodman had plans to eventually add him, he is no longer with Blizzard. ThoughOverwatch 2fans should not completely give up hope, the wait for Maugahas only just begun.

Overwatch 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
