Summary
Marvel fans have a lot to look forward to from Insomniac Games withMarvel’s Spider-Man 2right around the corner andMarvel’s Wolverineon the horizon.Marvel’s Spider-Man 2looks to up the ante from its predecessors with the introduction of a variety of new mechanics including those granted to Peter Parker by his Symbiote Suit, the ability to swap between Peter and Miles, and their web wings. Out of all these new abilities Insomniac has developed forMarvel’sSpider-Man 2, one seems like a shoo-in to make its way into its upcoming Wolverine game.
Insomniac’s approach to gameplay inMarvel’sSpider-Man 2evolves that of their previous work to greatly expand the combat options available to players. Withall of the new abilities inMarvel’sSpider-Man 2, players will have a lot to work with when dealing with Kraven and his minions, as well as Venom, as they battle their way around New York. However, the new parry mechanic seems like a particular game-changer forMarvel’sSpider-Man 2and will likely be Insomniac’s test-run of the ability ahead ofMarvel’sWolverine.

Spider-Man 2’s Parry Mechanic Would be Perfect for Wolverine
Peter Parker’s acquisition of theSymbiote Suitgrants him a variety of new abilities that he didn’t previously have access to. Using moves like Venom Tendrils and Symbiote Spike Ball will give Peter an all-new feel when it comes to combat, but giving players the option to parry attacks seems like it will add another layer of strategy to the action gameplay ofMarvel’sSpider-Man 2. Now, both Spider-Men have the ability to parry enemies when a yellow spider-sense alert appears over their heads.
As much as this mechanic will feel like a breath of fresh air for combat inMarvel’sSpider-Man 2, a parry mechanic makes a lot more sense for Wolverine as a character. Arguably the most iconic aspect ofWolverine is his Adamantium claws, and they will likely be the main focus of combat in Insomniac’s upcoming title. As the developer will likely be looking to make combat with these claws as in-depth as possible, giving Logan the ability to parry incoming enemy attacks with his claws would be an epic way to showcase the strength of this fan-favorite X-Men hero.
It may be tough for Insomniac to translate some of the most popularmechanics from theMarvel’sSpider-Manseriessuch as the web-slinging powers that allow for quick traversal across New York City. Since Logan doesn’t have that same type of movement ability, Insomniac will likely want to focus on other areas from theMarvel’sSpider-Manseries that could translate well toMarvel’sWolverine. Aside from the storytelling and mission structure of the series,Marvel’sWolverinewill likely draw upon combat mechanics fromMarvel’sSpider-Manthe heaviest, which would give Insomniac the chance to further refine the parry mechanic.
Going from theMarvel’s Spider-Manseries to aMarvel’sWolverinegameis an interesting turnaround for Insomniac as the heroes are quite different in both their abilities and their personalities. However, it makes sense from a development standpoint that Insomniac would want to useMarvel’sWolverineas an opportunity to iterate upon mechanics established in theMarvel’sSpider-Mangames, and the ability to parry attacks is simple enough yet a fitting power for Logan that it is likely to make its way into the upcoming title. Marvel fans will likely have to wait untilMarvel’sSpider-Man 2is released to get more info aboutMarvel’sWolverineand see just how Insomniac plans to carry elements of the former over to the latter.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2releases on October 20, exclusively on PS5.
