A second title was released three years later, and fans had to wait another six years for the most recent game,Metro Exodus.
As it’s been almost five years since the launch ofMetro Exodus,fans of the series have been getting antsy for news about a potential follow-up. ThePlayStation State of Play is expected to take place sometime at the end of January, and there have been rumors that the long-awaited newMetrogame will be revealed then. However, as happens so often these days, details about the next entry in the series may have leaked early.
Unfortunately for some and to the joy of others, the nextMetrogame may be a VR release calledMetro Awakening,according to known leaker Kurakasis. It will also, saysInsider Gaming, be a single-player experience. And since it’s rumored that it will be revealed at the PlayStation State of Play, it might be a PS VR2 exclusive as well. However, in 2020, developer4A Games announcedthat the nextMetrogame was being created for “Gen 9 consoles and PC,” though that plan may have of course changed. It was also mentioned in the same post that the new entry would feature multiplayer, something that has not been offered in previousMetrogames.
What’s Rumored About the Next Metro Game?
The possible announcement of the nextMetrogame at the January PlayStation State of Play showcase would coincide with another rumor that dates back to February 2023. At that time, Spanish YouTuber eXtas1stv cited insider information that thenextMetrogame was planned for release sometime in 2024, and Insider Gaming revealed that it was already in a fully playable state.
TheMetrouniverse with its immersive post-apocalyptic settingand mutated monsters would be ideal for a virtual reality game, but that would also leave a huge portion of the fan base out in the cold. There is always the possibility that a non-VR game is also in the works, or thatMetro Awakeningwill have both VR and standard versions available at some point.
TheMetrogames have thus far always been sequels, following the somewhat linear story of protagonist Artyom, whose primary goal is to safeguard the inhabitants of the Moscow metro and eventually find them a safe home outside. It would doubtless be disappointing for many fans of the franchise if the next chapter of theMetrostory were released in a format that only a select few could play, though like Valve’sHalf-Life Alyx,it wouldn’t be the first time a developer did just that.
