WhenThe Mediumwas released earlier this year, it was received pretty favorably by the fan base, and was nominated for a couple of awards and showed that the developer is a strong contender in the world of horror gaming. Unfortunately, for PlayStation fans, theBloober Team title was not available on PS5 at first but has since been released, though it meant many were unable to play the game for a good few months. Now, it appears a new update has just been made available for the game which adds a feature that the Xbox and PC versions were already enjoying.

In a recent post on Twitter, the official account forThe Mediummade mention of the fact that the latest update, patch 1.02, brings ray tracing to the PS5 port of the game. This update occurs just under a week after the game was launched for the new-gen PlayStation console when, at the time, a report fromWCCF Techshowed that ray tracing had not yet been implemented in the latest version. However, with this latest patch, that seems to be a moot point as it is now available.

For those who are not aware, ray tracing works by tracking every single light source in a game, such as a lamp or the sun, and then an algorithm determines how these light sources interact with the world. The intended purpose, overall, is for players to be able to experience gaming that has much more realistic visuals, particularly when it comes to light and shadows. It’s pretty much become the industry standard for modern gaming, and has even been implemented in games which don’t have advanced graphics, such asMinecraft.

On top of the ray tracing update, the tweet also says there are some improvements to the game as well, such as general performance, and better haptic feedback. One of the advantagesThe Mediumon PS5 has over the Xbox Series is the DuelSense controller. This feedback works in the PlayStation port by bombarding players with additional micro vibrations in the controller when, for example, players are using Marianne’s Spirit Shield. It also accelerates pulsing feedback whenever players need to hide from monsters and hold their breath.

Being agame influenced by the likes of Silent Hill,The Mediumhas certainly found a fan base within the horror community. While it hasn’t received enormous praise, there are those who value Bloober Team’s attempt at creating a somewhat unique gaming experience with its dual-reality mechanic.

The Mediumis out now for PC and Xbox Series X, and now PS5.
