The long-awaited second season ofFortniteChapter 2 dropped this week, and, as expected, players have been checking out the sizable influx of new content that has been added to the game, from new spy-themed locations tocharacter skins that come in two different versions. But amid all of that, players ofApex Legendshave spotted a few distinct features of that game now being utilized in Epic Games’ battle royale shooter.
This is far from the first time this has happened. In fact, this has basically been going on sinceApex’s surprise launch a year ago. Once word got out about the game’s innovative ping system, which made for stronger non-verbal communication between players, it only took a few weeksforFortniteto implement a ping system of its own. This was soon followed by the game copyingApex’s also-innovative respawn system in the form of respawn vans, and nowFortnitehas done it again, introducing what’s clearly its own take onApex’s loot vaults.

With Season 2,Fortniteadded a number of sealed vaults that contain high-tier weapons and items for players to collect, provided they have the keycard needed to unlock the vaults in their inventory. This is pretty much exactly how it’s been done inApex Legendssince it introduced vaultsback in October, and it’s not the onlyApex-ish feature that’s now inFortnite. In addition to the vaults, players have also taken notice of the game’s new Decoy Grenade, which deploys a clone that can move around and distract opponents, not unlike theApexcharacter Mirage.
Given how blatant the copying is with these “new” features, theApexcommunity was quick to notice and welcomed the latest installment of this ongoing saga by poking fun at Epic. All across theApex Legendssubreddit, players have shared afair number of memesjokingly calling out the developer and accusing it of being unoriginal.
Obviously, though, that’s hardly the case. After all,Fortnitehas brought its own share of innovation to the fold. Besides its building/resource-gathering mechanics, the game is responsible for popularizing the seasonal models and battle passes more and more games are employing for their post-launch content these days. Sure,Apexmay have arguably introduced more substantial gameplay innovations, but that doesn’t change the fact thatApex Legendscould stand to copy some ofFortnite’s newer features.
