Mortal Kombatis one of the most well-known series in fighting game history. With its stylistic combat, wide cast of characters and of course the gory fatalities that has made the series so famous,Mortal Kombathas been consistently releasing games since 1992, and has grown again in popularity since the soft reboot of the franchise that wasMortal Kombat 9.
The most recentMortal Kombatgame,Mortal Kombat 11, was released in April 2019, and introduced plenty of new features to the franchise. From the “fatal blows” that allowed many players to pull off great comebacks and clutch victories, to the introduction ofguest characters from other Warner Bros. franchises, such as the Terminator and comic book anti-hero Spawn. Now though, it seemsMortal Kombatdirector and co-creator Ed Boon may be looking to the series' past for future content.

Ed Boon’s Twitter is often a hot bed forMortal Kombatfans to speculate future games, DLC and more. Boon is known for his trolling and teasing of fans over Twitter, though in one recent tweet he appears genuine in his excitement at the prospect of some classic arcade skins to feature inMortal Kombat 11. “We’ve actually discussed (numerous times) how kool it would be to have a skin pack of the arcade game actors,” Boon said, “similar to how we did the movie skin pack.” This isn’t the first timeMortal Kombathas dipped into nostalgia to create downloadable content.Klassic skins have dropped for Cassie Cage, Jade, Kitana and more characters in the past.
Many fans agreed under Boon’s tweet that the idea of using the older sprite models from the arcadeMortal Kombatgames would make for some cool and interesting skins. The tweet even gained the attention of the actress and model for Sonya Blade inMortal Kombat 3, Kerri Ann Hoskins, who neither confirmed or denied her appearance for future content, only questioning why her Twitter was “blowing up.” Using older models for current graphics has been done before inMortal Kombat 11,and with improved facial recognition technology, life-like versions of the Terminator and characters from the firstMortal Kombatmoviewere added to the game.
Mortal Kombat’sdevelopment studio,NetherRealm was set to make an appearance at this year’s Game Awards, yet they had nothing to show at this current time. Many fans expect thatMortal Kombat 12could be on the horizon, while others believe thatMortal Kombat 11could still have some years left in it, which could be proven by the inclusion of “Klassic” arcade skins featuring the original game actors.
