Marvel and Capcom’s crossover franchise made a big splash earlier in June whenMarvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classicswas announced during a Nintendo Direct. It will bundle all the classic games into one package, bringing them to modern systems for the very first time. Some are hoping that this new collection could pave the way for a trueMarvel vs. Capcom 4.
Most fans don’t consider 2017’sMarvel vs. Capcom: Infiniteto be a trueMarvel vs. Capcom 4, due to its polarizing reception. Points of contention were the story campaign, the semi-realistic art style, and especially the roster. Due to it being a tie-in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, popular characters like Shuma-Gorath, Wolverine, Dr. Doom, and She-Hulk, among others, were cut from the roster ofInfinite. With Marvel putting a lot of attention on its newly re-acquiredX-Menrights in games likeMarvel’s Midnight Suns,Ultimate Alliance 3, and theArcade Classicscollection, this potentially opens the path for a newMarvel vs. Capcomgame, which Deadpool himself references.
In the newest issue of the2024Deadpoolcomic series, the Merc with a Mouth teams up with Taskmaster in order to take on a cult, with Deadpool specifically calling out to the other mercenary for a combination attack. Deadpool then jumps off of Taskmaster’s shield, flies through the air, and starts shooting at the robed figures while exclaiming, “Deadpool…and Taskmaster. Best. Friends. For. Ever!” before crashing into a wall. While upside down, Deadpool quips, “They should put that move inMarvel vs. Capcom 4.”
Deadpool’s History With Marvel vs. Capcom
This quip from Deadpool could be a reference toa potentialMarvel vs. Capcom 4being in development or just the writer being cheeky with fans. However, it wouldn’t be out-of-character for Deadpool to reference his last appearance in the franchise. Deadpool was previously playable inMarvel vs. Capcom 3, along with its updated re-releaseUltimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3,but was one of the many cut fromInfinite’s roster.
InMarvel vs. Capcom 3, Deadpool brings his whacky fourth-wall-breaking antics, such as using his own Health Bar as a weapon for a Hyper Combo, directly talking to the player whenever they win, or even asking Capcom if he can be on the cover of the nextStreet Fighter. In the same game, She-Hulk quips that if there’s anMvC4, she will take Wade down there, too. With the incrediblypositive reaction to theMarvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, this rematch could potentially happen.
