WithMario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hopereleasing in a few weeks, a producer from the development team confirms that the game won’t be featuring any form of multiplayer play. All showings of the game in gameplay previews and hands-on experiences have been focused on the game’s single player campaign, with the Rabbids teaming up with Mario and his friends on a new adventure. With this focus onSparks of Hope’s story, some players were left wondering if there would be any multiplayer modes.
In the previous game,Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, two forms of multiplayer modes were available, but both could only be accessed offline. The first was a local co-op mode where players could team up and take on a number of strategic challenges. The other was a local versus mode, where the players could battle each other with various items that can be utilized to turn the tide of battle. With this sequel, however, associate producer Quentin Correggi confirms that multiplayer is being scrapped entirely forSparks of Hope.

In a recent interview with Nintendo Everything, Correggi notes thatMario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hopewas always planned as a single-player adventure. He explained that when the team started building the project, they were looking to make it much more ambitious than the previous game. With this game’s focus on tactics and strategy, he noted they needed to “choose their battles” and direct their attention on the important details. In this case, delivering the core experience in the single-player story campaign.
Correggi states that the entire team was focused onimprovingSparks of Hope’s gameplayand features in the solo experience, as it is the “main pillar” of the entire game. He states that with each member working solely on a single-player experience, as opposed to splitting them in order to create a separate multiplayer mode, it was an easier and more efficient usage of their resources.
ConsideringSparks of Hope’s development teamis far larger than the previous entry, this puts into perspective the amount of required manpower in order to accomplish the team’s vision of creating a more ambitious game thanKingdom Battle. As Correggi states, fans shouldn’t expect any sort of multiplayer to be featured in the game, as it will be a “100%” solo experience. It’s possible that a multiplayer mode could come in the future, but it seems unlikely given the circumstances and the team’s focus on single-player content.
Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hopeis scheduled to release on October 20 for Nintendo Switch.
