At the Golden Globes,Varietyinterviewed Robbie about her work onBarbie. When asked how she had approached the film seriously, Robbie said didn’t. “No, I was cracking up all the time!” Robbie said. “This was a set filled with laughter and dancing and music and good vibes.”

Robbie was mortified by leakedBarbieset photos. She stated that it looked like she and co-star Ryan Gosling were having fun in those photos, but they were actually “dying” inside. She described the experience as “humiliating,” but that might have to do with those photos being released through unofficial channels. Robbie had expressed that the paparazzi had shown up, but hundreds of fans were watching the production unfold and taking their own photos.

The firstBarbiemovie trailerpromised a new era of dolls, and it’s easy to see why Robbie and company would have fun on the set based on the footage released.Barbielooks neon-coloured, plastic, and fun. TheBarbietrailer also included some cheeky references to films like2001: A Space Odyssey. It looks like Gerwig is turning the film into more than just another adaptation.

Even Gosling, who plays Ken, looked like he was having fun in his campy outfits. Gosling has shown a great comedic sensibility in the past - possiblymost notably inThe Nice Guys- and it’ll be exciting to see what he does with the material.Barbieprobably won’t be the most serious or have the highest stakes, but if it’s half as fun as Robbie and the released footage suggests, it could easily become a hit.

Barbieis scheduled to be released in theaters on July 21, 2025.
