Fans ofMarcel the Shell with Shoes Onwill be excited, with A24 dropping the first trailer for their feature film focusing on the series to their YouTube channel. First reactions show that this is sure to be the heartwarming hit of the summer.
Marcel the Shell is a character created by director Dean Fleischer-Camp and Jenny Slate, who also voices Marcel. Whilethere are three short filmsfocusing on the character posted to Fleischer-Camp’s YouTube channel, this will be the first feature film focusing on him.

The trailer itself looks just adorable. Expanding on the world already created in theMarcel the Shell with Shoes Onseries, this filmlooks to be mockumentary style. Marcel is just a shell with shoes on living with his grandma and watching60 Minutes, and the subject of a new documentary. In terms of the story, Marcel has the desire to find his family and meet others like him.
Fans will be very happy to know that Slate is back reprising her role as Marcel, and Fleischer-Camp is in the director’s chair. After premiering at the Telluride Film Festival in 2021, A24 acquired distribution rights.A24 is the trendiest companyin the business right now and is known for taking on pictures that are offbeat and weird. A story about a one-inch shell living with his grandma and looking for his family seems like a perfect fit. They also have garnered a lot of hardcore fans, meaningMarcel the Shell with Shoes Onis sure to develop a good cult following, if not worldwide success.
Initial responses to the film have been overwhelmingly positive. Though it hasn’t been widely released, critics have seen the film at Telluride as well as SXSW 2022, and so far 100% ofRotten Tomatoes criticshave given it glowing reviews. As Marcel the Shell is a fan-favorite character to millions of people, and because he hasn’t been seen in a new film since 2014, this will have those looking forward to the film very excited. It also brings an opportunity for introducing brand-new fans to the character, and a possible permanent revival. Only time will tell but the future for Marcel the shell with shoes on certainly looks promising.
