Magic: The Gatheringis introducing a new type of card soon, the siege battle card. The introduction of this new type happens in the “March of the Machine” set, which is available toMagic: The Gatheringplayers right now.
Released back in 1993, way before Wizards of the Coast was acquired by Hasbro or even dreamed of owningDungeons and Dragons,Magic: The Gatheringis one of the most successful trading card game ever released. Wizards of the Coast is happy to offer tons of new choices every year, sometimes even coming up with bold new directions for the game. One example is the Commander format, which was only released in 2011 and became the most popular way to play the game today.

Now,the controversial Wizards of the Coastis ready to change the game once more by adding a new type of card during the upcoming “March of the Machine” set: the Battle cards, which are available starting on April 21. According to the official announcement, there will be 36 of these cards, including at least four or five of each color, and some for mixed colors. Not only these new cards will tie in with the lore of the expansion but also affect the gameplay in interesting ways, allowing players to create new strategies based on them.

While new mechanics are introduced essentially every year inMagic, a new type of card is a big deal. All siege battle cards will be double-faced and will have two effects, one when they enter the field, and another one that will trigger when the card is flipped. Many of the cards cost between two and six mana to invoke and actually replace themselves when the players put them on the table, as most of them allow the gamers to draw new cards. Their effects, however, are very varied, as are the conditions to trigger the flips. In short, it’s still too early to tell whether some of these first-released siege battle cards will ever feature amongthe most expensiveMTGcardsor will end up forgotten as a fad.
MTGfans who are not interested in this next expansion set can already play using theDungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Secret Lairset, though. Released at the end of March, this expansion includes six new cards that tie in with the movie, is a limited collection, and it’s available for sale right now.
