A new clip fromM3GANhas been released, giving a sense of some intimidating behavior from the titular doll when it threatens Allison Williams.
M3GANis set to release in just a few weeks. The film is arogue AI sci-fi talein which Gemma (Williams) unexpectedly comes into the custody of her niece, Cady (Violet McGraw) and discovers how hard it is being a parent. Luckily, she’s a genius roboticist who’s working on just the project for her specific issue: a doll that will serve as a parent’s greatest ally and a child’s best friend. The Model 3 Generative Android, or M3GAN (Amie Donald, voice by Jenna Davis), looks like a little girl, but it’s soon discovered that M3GAN is more protective of her charge than intended.

In the new clip, M3GAN becomes protective of Cady when her aunt asks her to finish her dinner. M3GAN immediately chimes in with some parenting tips for Gemma, who proceeds to mute M3GAN. When Gemma grabs Cady’s arm to keep her from going to her room, M3GAN makes the lights flicker and warns Gemma.
The M3GAN clip is pretty characteristic ofthe killer doll genre. M3GAN is infatuated with her owner, and her protectiveness strains the boundaries of a normal relationship. M3GAN appears to be becoming self-aware; her programming is designed to be child-friendly, but it veers too far into a childlike understanding of the world. A simple situation becomes an ordeal because, in her childlike mentality, Gemma’s actions mean Cady is suffering.
She’s essentially a child that’s unable to learn right from wrong because she can’t be punished. Her creator may be trying to shirk the responsibility of parenthood twice: once with her niece and again with M3GAN. As M3GAN’s creator, Gemma is essentially her mother. It doesn’t look like the doll inspires much in the way of maternal feelings, however.
M3GAN is like Chucky from the 2019’sChild’s Playfilm. In that portrayal, Chucky is a doll with a microchip implanted inside his head. That microchip allows him to communicate, learn, and form a bond with a child. The official social media accounts forM3GAN and Chucky have interacted on Twitter. Maybe a team-up or face-off could happen in the future.
