At this point in time, DC’sDoom Patrolseries has enjoyed strong reception of its first two seasons and has amassed a relatively small yet vocal fanbase. The series debuted on DC’s streaming service, DC Universe, before releasing the second season simultaneously on DC Universe and HBO Max. Now that the third season has been announced as an exclusive to HBO Max, it seems clear that DC knows exactly what they have on their hands. That notion is also evident by the trailer for the third season, which promises a journey that is just as delightfully zany, if not more so, as the last two seasons.
The teaser showcasesmembers of the titular Doom Patrol—Crazy Jane, Elasti-girl, Cyborg, Robotman, and Negative Man—as they believe they might be dead and must fight not only to discover what has happened to them but also to rescue the daughter of the Doom Patrol’s medical doctor, Chief. The resulting adventure takes the heroes on a journey across dimensions and various strange locations in their quest to save the girl.

Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, Jovian Wade, Brendan Fraser, Matt Bomer, and Timothy Dalton all return for the third season, with Abi Monterey returning as Dorothy and with Ty Tennant (as Edwin Payne) and Wynn Everett (as Shelley Byron a.k.a. The Fog) joining as series newcomers. Series producer Jeremy Carver (who was also an executive producer onthe CW hitSupernatural) returns as a producer and writer, as do many key episode writers from the first and second seasons such as Tom Farrell and Shoshana Sachi.
Doom Patrolisn’t the only former DC Universe show to be featured on HBO Max. TheanimatedHarley Quinnseriesis available on the service, as are hit shows such asTitansandStargirl. In addition, DC also plans to release original feature film content on the platform, including films based on popular B-list heroes such as Batgirl, Static Shock, and Blue Beetle.
Doom Patrolis clearly a project with a lot of passion behind it, both from those working on it and from the fans invested in its story. With a memorable cast of heroes and a mind-bending plot, the series could very well join the ranks ofGame of Thronesand the upcoming adaptation ofThe Last of Usas yet another killer app for HBO Max—albeit one that may have more of a cult following than a more widespread fanbase.
