Summary

Some major developments regarding the upcominganime adaptation of Naoya Matsumoto’sKaiju No. 8manga have been released in the past week, including a broadcast date, cast news, a brand-new trailer, and character visuals. Initially announced with a teaser trailer in August 2022, Kaiju No. 8 is set to hit Japanese TV in the Spring of 2024, with Production I.G. behind the animation production.

The series' initial announcement took place at Anime Expo 2022, and now a concrete broadcast date has been set, with Kaiju No. 8 adding to the roster of highly anticipated anime coming next year.

Kaiju No. 8by Naoya Matsumoto is a sci-fi set in a dystopian futuristic Japan; in a world ravaged by horrible monstrosities known as Kaiju. 32-year-old Kafka Hibino is a disillusioned man who, in his ambitious childhood made a pact with his childhood friend Mina Ashiro to commit their lives to enlisting in the Japan Defense Force and wiping them out for good. However, life isn’t always what one wants it to be, and unfortunately for Kafka,entering the Defense Force isn’t so easy.

While he contributes to the cause in the best way he can through work cleaning up the sites of Kaiju extermination for his employer, Monster Sweeper Inc; Mina is Captain of the 3rd Division of the Defense Force, and one of its strongest officers. Defeating the Kaiju while standing beside his childhood friend is but a pipe dream for Kafka as he is now; however, after meeting the young and determined Reno Ichikawa, Kafka regains some of his motivation to enlist in the Defense Force and work towards the promise he made as a child. However, an imminent Kaiju threat unlike one anyone has ever seen stands to thwart everything Kafka is trying to achieve.

The three main cast members announced for roles in the upcomingKaiju No. 8anime include Masaya Fukunishi (Draken,Tokyo Revengers) who will be playing the series' protagonist, 32-year-old Kafka Hibino; Asami Seto (Nobara Kugisaki,JUJUTSU KAISEN) as Mina Ashiro and Wataru Kato (Jun Marchs Asari,Aoashi) as Reno Ichikawa. As mentioned previously, animation production ofKaiju No. 8is byProduction I.G (Heavenly Delusion), while Studio Khara (Rebuild of Evangelion) is behind the monster designs and artwork.

The character designs of the aforementioned were released alongside the cast announcement, with an additional design of Defense Force Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina, whose voice actor is yet to be revealed. The originalKaiju No. 8manga is serialized in Shueisha’s Jump+ website and has been since July 2020. It has 10 volumes out so far, with the latest having been released recently on August 4. VIZ has licensed theKaiju No. 8manga for English publication, with 8 volumes out so far.

TheKaiju No. 8anime is set for broadcast in April 2024.
