Summary

This article contains spoilers forGod of War Ragnarok. It’s been some time sinceGod of War Ragnarokreleased on PS5. Fans expect the game to come to PC eventually, but in the meanwhile, a New Game Plus update released in early 2023 to ensureGod of War Ragnarokplayers are satisfied with the current content. Due to Santa Monica Studio deciding it would be better to end the 2018God of War’s Norse saga in two games rather than three,Ragnarokis a well-stuffed package that nonetheless draws its heartfelt, family-focused story to a close.

However, the story of the game itself may not be over yet. A rumor recently surfaced claiming that Santa Monica Studio was about 60% done making DLC forGod of War Ragnarok. Details were vague on whether this would be a small story scenario or a short game unto itself, but if this rumor is true, fans could be looking atmoreGod of Warsoonerthan they’d expect. There’s a good chance that the introduction ofRagnarok’s DLC could also lead the series itself into a radically different future.

Story DLC Could Shed Light On God of War’s Plans

Getting DLC now would be a major surprise, but there is good reason forGod of War Ragnarokto have it. The game’s intent was to wrap up its Norse saga, and it did so more definitively than any prior entry, eventhe apocalypticGod of War 3. Atreus and Kratos have reaffirmed their familial bonds, Odin’s corrupting influence over the Norse pantheon is deposed, and Ragnarok itself is averted. Kratos has never been more at peace with himself, his godly status, and with the other gods and people around him. There’s little else forGod of Warto cover in its Norse chapter.

Little, that is, besides Atreus' own adventures. The postgame forGod of War Ragnaroksees Atreus leave Kratos' side to search for any surviving members of the Giant species. Any DLC forGod of War Ragnarokshould follow Atreus' quest, but it’s how that ends that could decide the franchise’s direction. If Atreus returns to his father by its end, that implies the next fullGod of Wartitle will tackle a new mythology and possibly a whole new cast. However, if Atreus keeps adventuring, fans may be treated to a solo Atreus game next, assuming the expansion isn’t one itself.

God of War Expansions May Become A Regular Sight

That’s not even getting into the possibilities of the DLC including hints at the nextGod of Wartitle, which many fans theorize could move to Egypt. However, the mere existence of DLC could be an indicator of major changes in theGod of Warfranchise. Story DLC isn’t something thatGod of Warhas tried before, but it would have some advantages going forward. At the very least,ifGod of War Ragnarok’s DLC does well, then it’s safe to assume that fans will see more story DLC or standalone expansions in the series future.

With how much time and money it takes to develop aGod of Wartitle now, fully utilizing new mythologies in a single game should be a top priority. To that end, DLC building off of the assets and story present in a given entry would be vital, exhausting a setting without needing to base two or three games in it. With an approach like that,God of Warcould set a healthy patternof one main game and one expansion to cover any gods and monsters left out of the initial offering. All that’s left is to see howGod of War Ragnarok’s potential DLC paves the way for its future.

God of War Ragnarokis available now exclusively for PS5.
