The latestGenshin Impactteaser has arrived, giving important background information for the 1.5 gameplay update. The teaser is story-focused, with an emphasis onGenshin Impact’scontinuing narrative around the Liyue region.
FollowingGenshin Impact’s1.5 update, developer miHoYo released the trailer, aptly named ‘Through the Eyes of a Dragon,’ as its focus is on Azhdaha’s release from the earth by the Geo Archon Rex Lapis. Much likeGenshin Impact’sother teaser trailers, Through the Eyes of a Dragon is mainly a window into one of the game’s world creation myths, along with putting a focus on the Liyue region, where gameplay in the 1.5 update takes place.

The trailer gives a detailed recount of Geo Archon Rex Lapis' release of one ofGenshin Impact’snewest bosses, Azhdaha, from beneath the ground and their subsequent victories together in battle. This is told from two perspectives, via the storyteller (who has narrated the previousGenshin Impacttrailers) and directly from Rex Lapis himself. Both characters take turns to give information regarding Azhdaha, who cried out to the Geo Archon to come above ground and see the sun.
The Archon took pity on him and brought him to the surface, then carving his rocky edifice into that of a ‘vivid representation of a dragon.’ The Archon gives the dragon eyes to see the world and Azhdaha bursts from the rock in the form of an actual dragon. Azhdaha has become a weekly boss inGenshin Impact’slatest 1.5 gameplay update, unlocked by completing one of the Zhongli story missions.Zhongli is a playable character inGenshin Impact, and the current vessel of the Geo Archon Rex Lapis, who is featured in the trailer. Fans of the character will likely be interested in learning some new lore about him, told directly from his perspective.
What some people might not know aboutZhongli in thisGenshin Impactteaser trailer, is that the story of the Geo Archon and Azhdaha is most probably aretelling of a Chinese myth about a Buddhist painter named Zhang Sengyao. The artist was commissioned to paint four dragons on the wall of a temple, but as he got to work on the painting, onlookers noticed something curious about the image; Zhang had forgotten to paint the dragons' eyes. However, Zhang explained that he had done this on purpose, as the eyes are the spirit of the dragon, and if he added them, the dragons would come to life and fly away.
The people around him scoffed at his explanation, but were quickly proven wrong, as Zhang quickly painted four dots, thus giving pupils to two of the dragons. A lightning bolt hit the wall of the temple, and the two dragons came to life, flying from the wall and into the sky. This story gave birth to a Chinese idiom: “Paint the dragon, dot the eyes,” which means to add extra touches to something already great to make it perfect. This unique version of the story gives interesting context toGenshin Impact’sLiyue regionand along with the 1.5 update, could be considered one of miHoYo’s extra touches to an already widely loved game.
Genshin Impactis available now on Mobile, PC, PS4 and PS5, and is in development for Nintendo Switch.
