Final Fantasy 16’s Side Quests are often designed to give players additional insights into the wider world in which Clive’s journey occurs or to reveal more about characters encountered during the main story. The Side Quest “Carving Out a Niche” is largely the latter, offering further insight into the character of L’ubor through the eyes of one of his apprentices.
ThisFinal Fantasy 16Sidequest has players assisting one of L’ubor’s apprentices as they attempt to decipher a particularly cryptic request. L’ubor wants them to create a carving knife that “Embodies the Spirit of Dalimil.” This means doing a bit of investigating, tracking down the right material and technique, and then hoping the result is what L’ubor is after.

Carving Out a Niche Quest in Final Fantasy 16
This quest becomes available after players have earned L’ubor’s trust during the main story and is started by speaking to Sava. Sava is one of L’ubor’s apprentices and can be found near L’ubor himself in Dalimil. He’ll be quick to explain his problem and L’ubor’s riddle, and Clive can then offer to help.
The first thing L’ubor suggests is speaking to people around the town who would have a use for a Carving Knife to decipher what they would want from one. This, he hopes, would satisfy the criteria by creating a carving knife that embodies the people of Dalimil’s needs. Players will want to speak to the chef in the market nearby and the hunter near the far gate. This quest doesn’t require players to engage in combatsince it mostly occurs in safe areas.

After speaking to them and regrouping with Sava, it is revealed that his conversation with the butcher was similarly unsurprising and that, collectively, the blade needs to be light, durable, and hold a sharp edge.
Since a blade that meets all three requirements is beyond any material Sava knows of, he proposes visiting a metal trader who L’ubor works with, who might know of a suitable material. Sure enough, after heading out of town and meeting with the Trader, players will learn that there is a technique using limestone to create a blade that mostly meets these requirements.
Since this particular limestone is sourced locally, it would indeed be a blade that “Embodies the Spirit of Dalimil.” There’s a spot south of Dalimil that is marked on the map, so players just need to grab three pieces of limestone from there and then trek back to town to hand it in to Sava.
Now that Sava has his limestone, players can finally learn the conclusion to L’ubor’s test. L’ubor seems pleased with Sava’s initiative, though he reveals that the purpose of the test was to teach Sava that, when smithing, it is important to consider the needs of the client first and foremost.
Players are rewarded with a Goblin coin alongside theEXP, Gil, and Renown rewards forcompleting thisFF16quest.
