In an effort to cancelYouTubestars the Dolan Twins, a six year old video was dug up and showed out of context to paint them in a negative light. The issue in question is the clip showing one of the twinsusing a homophobic slurand has sparked outrage.
The Dolan Twins are very popularYouTubestars that try to avoid drama for the most part. Their videos focus on the pair’s relationship as twins and they frequently collaborate with other YouTubers. As they are considered very wholesome content creators, many were shocked to see this clip of them saying this hurtful word.

A recent video sees the two defend themselves, explaining the situation for those that may not have the full context. After learning the full story, most agree that the Dolan Twins werejustified in using the slur, but others think that there is never an appropriate context to say that word.
The twins begin discussing the issue at the 13:35 mark, and reveal that the clip which has been making the rounds was taken out of context from a video six years ago. That video explained why the pair was moving to LA, and it was because they weregetting severely bulliedat school. Apparently, they used the slur when describing that other people used to call them that word, not in reference to any other person or with ill intent. They continue on to explain that the video was six years ago and that they were only 14 at the time.
The Dolan twins claim that they were simply being honest about the situation, and even beeped out the word in the video from six years ago. To some, this shows the danger of cancel culture, while others feel as though the use of the phrase was still inexcusable. Victims speaking out certainly has value, as numerous instances ofpaedophilia in theSmash Bros.communitywere discovered because one person decided to speak out, but many feel as though this is a completely different situation.
It remains to be seen whether or not this willclear up the controversya bit, but hopefully if there was a lesson to be learned, the Dolan Twins have learned it. It’s unlikely that they will be making another mistake like that again, especially considering that it has already been six years since the incident and nothing else has come up.
