The world-first completion ofDestiny 2’s Root of Nightmares raid has led to numerous Darkness Splinters appearing throughout Neomuna. It’s a longstanding tradition inDestiny 2for world-first raid completions to lead to sudden changes in the world. These changes can prove dramatic or subtle, adding exciting content or furtheringDestiny 2’s story. So far, the Root of Nightmares completion hasn’t led to any particularly big changes, toDestiny 2players' dismay, but there are some noteworthy additions to mention.

The Root of Nightmares raid, the first to launch forDestiny 2’sLightfallexpansion, arrived on March 10. While manyDestiny 2players were expecting the raid to take a significant amount of time to complete due to Bungie raising gameplay difficulty inLightfall, that was not the case. Root of Nightmares was completed by a team of lesser-known players in around two and a half hours, a speedy pace compared to priorDestiny 2raids. Bungie confirmed the completion within two hours.

After Bungie confirmed the first completion of Root of Nightmares, Splinters of Darkness started appearing across thenewLightfallzone of Neomuna. Splinters of Darkness are floating, stationary crystals with an orange haze surrounding them. Players can activate them, after which they’ll disappear. There are no clues, quests, or story bits available indicating what these Darkness Splinters are, leaving manyDestiny 2players befuddled.

The one thing that is clear is that Darkness Splinters are associated with one ofLightfall’s secret Triumphs. OneDestiny 2player on Reddit claimed that they collected “all of them” and in return received 80 points toward their Triumph score. Collecting individual Darkness Splinters alsorewards Strand Meditation currency, as well as Neomuna reputation, but that appears to be it.

One thing thatLightfallplayers should be aware of is thatDestiny 2has to be restarted in order to claim these Darkness Splinters. Otherwise, when players approach them a message reading “Requires Destiny 2: Lightfall” will appear on-screen, regardless of whether the player ownsLightfallor not. Players just startingDestiny 2now shouldn’t experience this bug.

All in all, while the Darkness Splinters may be an underwhelming addition toDestiny 2, at least it’s something. It’s indicative that defeating Root of Nightmares has movedLightfall’s story forward. Darkness is spreading, and what that means will require further investigation. There are also reports that Neomuna News has some updated reports worth listening to. As Bungie has made clear, there’splenty of story yet to discover inDestiny 2Year 6.

Destiny 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
