Bungie posted a clarification of its plans forDestiny 2chat improvements following an influx of fan inquiries. Its latest comments on the matter arrived mere hours after the developerofficially announcedDestiny 2: LightfallSeasons 20 and 21.
Despite pushing six,Destiny 2is still going strong, boasting hundreds of thousands of monthly active players across its combined platforms. The seventh major expansion for the hit online shooter,Lightfall, will be releasing on PC and the last two console generations in late February. Last year’s expansion alreadyunderlinedDestiny 2’slasting impact a million timesover, and while it remains to be seen whether Bungie will disclose its DLC pre-order figures this time around, there’s little doubt thatLightfallwill usher in another massive player spike.

In the meantime, the developer took to social media to clarify that the communications improvements it announced alongside the next pair ofD2seasons aren’t the only such additions to the game that are currently in the pipeline. But while “additional chat support” is hence part ofBungie’s overall roadmap forDestiny 2, the company isn’t ready to commit to a specific timeframe for those features just yet.
The ex-Microsoft studio pledged to “invest in the overall chattiness” ofDestiny 2as part of its February 13 announcement. Its decision to do so stems from an internal assessment that the hit game has a tendency to feel “lonely” for those who aren’t playing it with people they know, a company representative wrote in a blog post. Though Bungie is adamant to start addressing this issue, the developer acknowledges a major boon to player communications isn’t something that can be delivered “right away withLightfall.”
Regardless, the studio says it is fully committed to paving new communication paths betweenDestiny 2players moving forward. Its first step in that direction will come in the form of “text chat opt-in changes” and text-to-speech capabilities, as well as robust chat moderation and filtering options, the company revealed. All those features are expected to debut duringDestiny 2: LightfallSeason 22, together with a previously confirmed Commendation system allowing players to award accolades and social recognition to one another after completing various activities. The 2022 announcement of that gameplay mechanic and some otherquality-of-life features received widespread praise from theDestiny 2fandom.
Looking further, Bungie has also outlined a number of communication-focused improvements planned to debut duringDestiny 2Season 23. Those include the ability to queue from any in-game screen, create auto-joinable groups, and even tag posts with keywords in order to make them inherently more discoverable.
Destiny 2is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, while itsLightfallexpansion is scheduled to release on July 07, 2025.
