Summary
Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO’s roster pays plenty of attention to Goku and Vegeta, which has its own set of perks and consequences. When it comes to a series such asDragon Ball, there is a wide selection of fighters that would be worthy of joining the playable roster, a tradition that many past titles have kept.Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZEROwill almost certainly keep up with this trend. Goku and Vegeta are already well accounted for in the game’s playable roster, and while both are popular and important characters, their overall presence in the roster is worth discussing.
In a sort ofcomeback forDragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi,Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZEROwill be continuing the series' gameplay under a new title. WhileDragon Ball FighterZhas performed well, it’s a 2D tournament fighter.Sparking! ZEROis going back to the series' bread and butter as a 3D fighter, complete with arenas based on iconic spots from the series. An important part of that formula is an expansive roster.Dragon Ballhas been running for decades and has amassed a frankly astonishing number of viable fighters across the series. That means that much will be expected ofDragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO’s roster.

Goku and Vegeta Fill Plenty of Character Slots in Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO
A recent trailer did plenty to show offDragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO’s Goku and Vegeta variants. As two of the series' most important characters, they were obvious locks for the game since it was announced. In fact,Sparking! ZEROgoes further to highlight them than expected. Among the revealed characters for the roster, there are 11 variants for Goku and 13 for Vegeta. No matter how important they are to the series, this is still a lot of roster spots for just two characters.
For context,Mortal Kombat 1had 23 playable fighters in its launch roster, whileDragon Ball Sparking! ZEROhas 24 character slots devoted to Goku and Vegeta alone.

There is some validity in featuring multiple Gokus and Vegetas in-game. Because the rosters ofDragon Ballgames take inspiration from the series, they span all across the show’s different eras. Throughout this time, Goku and Vegeta have gone through many forms.
For example, beforeGoku unlocked his Super Saiyan transformation, he would use kaio-ken to boost his power. Likewise, Vegeta’s initial appearance featured him in full Saiyan armor rather than the stripped-down outfit that he would wear later. Having multiple variants of Goku and Vegeta lets the game include snapshots of them from various points in the series, rather than just one, like a trip down memory lane with each iteration.

Sparking! ZERO’s Roster Shouldn’t Undervalue Other Important Characters
WhileSparking! ZEROwill likely have a huge roster, any fans of characters who don’t make it in would likely point to the many Gokus and Vegetas in the roster. In addition, if the Gokus and Vegetas play too similarly to each other, that could impact gameplay as matches could lack variety.
It was inevitable that Goku and Vegeta would be inDragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO, although the amount of appearances that they make is a surprise. In order forSparking! ZEROto live up to its trailer, however, it will need to deliver on all fronts, including its roster. Having several versions of Goku and Vegeta on the roster is good for paying tribute to the series, but having them take up so much of the roster is risky. Goku and Vegeta will be front and center inDragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO, but the rest of the cast needs attention as well and could easily be eclipsed at the moment.
