As is typical of this time of year, rumors have been swirling about the next game in theCall of Dutyfranchise. Activision has been especially secretive about this year’s entry, allegedly due to some behind-the-scenes drama, but the general consensus is that the game will be developed by Treyarch, the studio behind theBlack Opsseries. Considering this, many have assumed that the nextCall of DutyisBlack Ops 5or aBlack Opsreboot, but apparently the game may actually be titledCall of Duty: Vietnaminstead.

This comes from Jason Schreier, formerly of Kotaku, who is one of the most reliable sources when it comes to insider video game industry knowledge. While interacting with people on Twitter, Schreier stated that he’s heard the titleCall of Duty: Vietnam"thrown around a couple of times," and that as far as he knows, the game will still technically be part of theBlack Opsseries. However, Schreier made it a point to clarify that he is not completely sure about this and that since he is “not a COD person,” he doesn’t know “what it really means to be aBlack Opsgame.”

Schreier added that he doesn’t thinkCall of Duty: Vietnamis a reboot, as was previously reported. In any case, his Twitter statements line up with recent rumors about the game, which claim thatCall of Duty: Vietnamwill be set during the Cold War and will still beset in theBlack Opsuniverseeven if it doesn’t have theBlack Opssubtitle.

AssumingCall of Duty: Vietnamis truly the 2020Call of Dutygame, one has to imagine that it will take a “boots on the ground” approach that’s been missing from Treyarch’sCoDgames sinceBlack Ops 2. BothBlack Ops 3andBlack Ops 4use science-fiction technology and feature advanced movement features, but aCall of Dutygame set in Vietnamwould presumably take a much more realistic approach.

While theCall of Duty: Vietnamcampaign would likely be more realistic, that doesn’t mean that the game would abandon some of the more fantastical elements that the TreyarchCall of Dutygames are known for. For example, it’s highly likely thatCall of Duty: Vietnamhas Zombiesof some kind, so fans of that game mode should have that to look forward to later this year.

Of course, this is assuming that the reports onCall of Duty: Vietnamare accurate and that the game is still due out in 2020. There’s been some concern thatCall of Duty2020 could be delayed due to theongoing coronavirus pandemic, but fans will just have to take a wait and see approach on that front.
