The rumored expansion coming toCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2offers an opportunity to add some classic weapons to the mix. Before becoming a game as a service,Call of Dutygames would release a ton of new weapons for players to use on launch and mostly leave it at that. However, with the reboot ofCall of Dutyin the form ofModern Warfareand its sequelCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2being a live service game, there are more chances to not only improve on some underrated gadgets but add to the already beefy roster of weapons.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2was released with 51 weapons, including a plethora of different archetypes for ranged weapons. This is on top of launchers and classicCall of Dutymelee weapons, the knife, and a riot shield. Moreover, each gun was boiled down to 33 weapon platforms in the newly dubbed Gunsmith 2.0, and gave players immense customizability. However, the weapon train doesn’t end there, as four new weapons were added during Season one, and more weapons are coming with Season 2. In addition to the expansive multiplayer modes ofModern Warfare 2andWarzone 2’s cheaper loadout weapons, it’s possible that players will see classic weapons return with the rumored advent of a new expansion in 2023.

What the Premium Update Means To Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Revealed in Activision Blizzard’s Q3 2022 earnings report, the expansion was rumored to release sometime Fall of 2023 and is said to be a full premium experience and a continuation ofModern Warfare 2. While that could be simple hype, and there is plausiblecriticism withCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2as a whole, the bottom line is there will likely be moreModern Warfare 2content. This opens the door to various possibilities like new maps and operators, new game modes for multiplayer, and maybe even more weapons.

Moreover, considering this is rumored to be a “premium experience,” it seems more than likely Activision Blizzard will take full advantage to give players a reason to play. Also, seeing that theSeason 2 roadmap was revealed forWarzone 2and it’s one of most popular battle royale games on the market, there is a reason to come back and give the free-to-play game a try if more fan-favorite weapons fromCall of Duty’s past come back.

Classic Weapons Could Change How Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Is Played

There are fourrifle classes inModern Warfare 2-assault rifle, battle rifle, marksman rifle, and sniper rifle. A fantastic possible addition to the assault rifle category could be the ACR. First featured in the originalCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2back in 2009, this weapon was one of the most iconic and balanced weapons to come out of the game. It had it all - solid damage, manageable recoil, and handling, making it almost a no-brainer to add back to the current title.

In the battle rifle class, the Famas could triumphantly return toModern Warfare 2. While technically an assault rifle, the Famas would be a welcome addition to the game that shouldn’t suffer from one of the lingering issues that players have been lamenting, which is thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s unlocks are needlessly complicated. As for the marksman and sniper rifles categories, it’s a bit of a mixed bag.Modern Warfare 2already has a nice variety of sniper rifles with a vast array of customizability. However, seeing the return of the SKS would be a welcome return. A marksman rifle with roots in classicCall of Duty, the weapon was agile despite having a faster rate of fire.

As for sniper rifles, the ZRG 20mm could be a game-changer inModern Warfare 2. Built for sharpshooters, the ZRG 20mm has some of the highest bullet velocity in its class. Its return could finally bring some competition to the other semi-automatic sniper rifle, the Signal 50. As such, sniper rifles inModern Warfare 2and several other returning weapons could make or break the meta, and at the very least, players should expect a major shake-up if the DLC does come with more guns.

Close Quarter Fights In Modern Warfare 2 Could be More ‘Risk and Reward’

With significant damage and range on top of low recoil, the fan-favorite UMP45 would be a fantastic addition to the game and could overshadow some ofModern Warfare 2’s fastest weapons. WhileModern Warfare 2has a variety of shotguns, most of which are pump action, they don’t hold a candle to the Spas-12. A powerful weapon in its own right, the Spas-12 was a high-risk, high-reward kind of gun with high damage at the cost of fire rate. While it was arguably one of the most overpowered weapons inCall of Duty, this could easily be remedied with an update or two.

Easily recognizable by sight and sound, the M60 is a weapon that defines the light machine gun category inCall of Duty. While it has one of the worst fire rates, it makes up for its serious damage and relatively clean iron sights. Last but not least, and one of the most devastating sidearms inCall of Dutyhistory, the Model 1887 would be a powerful, if not controversial, addition to some ofModern Warfare 2’s best close-quarters weapons. A mix of a side arm and a shotgun, the Model 1887 was devastatingly powerful and fun to use.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2has many weaponsto choose from, but it’s often the classic ones that not only defined the series but were one of the main driving forces that made fans come back for the next game. As a result, it would only make sense for some classics to come back and shine a new light on the current meta, even though some might lose their charm and others might prove to be once again the best out there.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
