Comparing Biomutant and Overgrowth

The most basic thing thatBiomutantandOvergrowthhave in common is the premise.Fans who have been followingBiomutantknowthat the game is set in a distant future where human society is long gone and animals have mutated into sentient beings of many kinds.Overgrowthdoes something very similar. Instead ofBiomutant’s customizable mutant protagonist,Overgrowthfeatures a rabbit protagonist whose quest leads to encounters with other anthropomorphic animals, including wolves, cats, and dogs.

Another important thing thatBiomutantandOvergrowthshare is a focus on martial arts. Experiment 101 has continuously stressed martial arts as crucial toBiomutant. As the player explores the game’s setting, they’ll come across all kinds of martial arts master and learn new techniques that they can blend into combat alongside swords and gunplay.Overgrowthalso puts a heavy emphasis on martial arts, and likeBiomutant,it does its best to give players options on how to use their techniques. The brute force and stealth approaches simultaneously available inOvergrowthare not unlikeBiomutant’s choices between fightingwith guns, swords, fists, or mutant abilities.

Overgrowth’s Love of Fighting

AdmittedlyOvergrowthhas a weakness in the form of awkward platforming, but the game’s fans largely agree that Wolfire Games makes up for that flaw withOvergrowth’s combat. It’s intentionally designed to be highly cinematic and empowering, rewarding players for being resourceful, positioning well in combat, and above all, being flashy. That sounds not unlikeBiomutant’s combat, which looks like it’s intentionally over the top in some of the same ways. After all,Biomutant’s protagonist can take overa giant robotic hand and ride it into battle.BiomutantandOvergrowthseem designed on a shared principle of a love of action that looks as exciting as it plays.

Overgrowthon Steam happens to be a great gateway into Wolfire Games' works, since it comes with a free copy of its acclaimed 2013 shooterReceiver, which goes to great lengths to simulate using a handgun in battle. Getting intoOvergrowthnow also gives fans an opportunity to join its community, which still holds events related toOvergrowth’s action sequences and in-game map maker.Biomutant’s release is just around the corner, but sometimes the closest releases feel like they’re the farthest away. For anyBiomutantfans who are feeling that way,Overgrowthmight be what they need to scratch their itch.

Biomutantreleases on July 24, 2025 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
