Marvel made some pretty huge announcements during their live-action panel at San Diego Comic-Con, not least of which was the reveal of two new Avengers movies in the pipeline:Avengers: The Kang DynastyandAvengers: Secret Wars, both of which are due to arrive in 2025 and will conclude Marvel’s Multiverse Saga. Now, Marvel has announced thatThe Kang Dynastyhas found its director, and it’s someone the studio has worked with previously.
The Hollywood Reporterhas revealed that Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed 2021’sShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will direct the next entry in the Avengers series. Along with this latest job from the studio, Cretton will be keeping busy withthe upcoming Wonder Man series for Disney Plus, along with a Shang-Chi sequel slated for some time in the future (though this was not elaborated on as part of Marvel’s many announcements during SDCC).

Though both Avengers projects will likely remain cloaked in secrecy, there are several aspects of each that can be gathered just from the titles alone. It has been known for some time thatKang (played by Jonathan Majors)will be the Big Bad of Marvel’s next phases, with the character having already been introduced inLoki(or, at least, a variant of the character). Kang is also set to be the main villain ofthe upcomingAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.Marvel’s heroes will likely have to face off against the time-traveling being before possibly being introduced to an even bigger threat inSecret Wars.
Something else that is unknown at this point is what the Avengers team will even look like, considering how many new heroes have made or will make their way into the MCU over the next few years. Regardless, both upcoming Avengers movies seem to be taking a similar approach asInfinity WarandEndgame, in that they will release within a few months of each other, possibly serving as a larger, two-part story. However, before those movies hit theaters, Marvel fans will be introduced tothe newest incarnation of the Fantastic Four,who may play a big role in both Avengers movies.
Cretton has proven that he is more than capable of handling a huge, action-packed movie, withShang-Chigarnering praise for both its sweeping story as well as its action scenes (the bus fight, in particular, has received a lot of praise for its fight choreography and creativity). Cretton is just the first director to be announced for these future projects, but he may be in good company if Marvel is serious aboutcourting a big name forFantastic Four. Either way, after a somewhat rocky phase four, it looks like Marvel Studios is getting back on track.
